Eyeslots were reduced from 1.25" openings to the current <1" in 1983, iirc. I had a helm that was completed just before the rule change came in and had to modify it. By that time rigid elbow & knees, the current kidney protection and a gorget rule was in effect, as well as the hockey ...

I hope I didn't give the impression that Meridies doesn't have *any* faults by what I stated above... That surely wasn't my intention.

Just that *this* particular issue is one that I have never personally witnessed here.

Purely anecdotal, but in my 26 years of experience in Meridies, I have *never* once heard of anyone deriding anyone else over the size of their shield. Construction materials? Sure... (ultra light aluminum shields that weigh nothing) But over size? Nope. And we have everything from a huge barn door ...

I've often thought about putting an axe-head on my "madu" (or, as I call it, my short spear with a butt-spike), but I don't like gauntlets, and want to keep the basket hilt on it. I'd likely never punch with the axe head of it. Just have it there so it doesn't look like a "madu"...

So it makes a weapon that didn't fit into our time period even more a-historic? Okay. I'll still fight against it. Yup. Which is why I don't call mine a Madu. 'Tis a short spear with a butt-spike (no buckler on mine). And before I'm derided...I also have a 24" round viking shield I use as well...

But what I always end up seeing on a list field is this:

From personal experience...one made like the first just turns into a propeller when hit. That's why the 2nd is more popular.

The biggest unrealistic advantage is in being able to use a haft to repeatedly block weapons blows. Any real object used for that kind of constant static blocking rather than deflection would have to be very substantial. It would likely need to be steel or reinforced with steel or iron. Such a devi...

Never understood why anyone cares one way or the other what size someone else's shield was. I don't care if you fight with a dinner plate or a barn door. Or none at all. For melees, I have a big barn door shield. For everything else, I have a 24" round centergrip, made from oak. *shrug*
