I like a 3/4 or full circle cloak. I make mine so it can also be worn since that is essentially what you would have been using. You want it heavy enough to be effective as a parry device. I don't advise using it to swish back and forth like a pendulam. Wrap it about your hand to get a good grip and ...

I made a pair. The left was done first, Had some help from the Friday night crew at Sir Talbots. The right I did myself with the barest minimun of tools. A ball pein hammer, railroad spike, home made rivet set, vise, rawhide hammer found at a garage sale, trailer hitch ball and a cresent end-clipper...

OK. Having seen this up close and personal: Damn it's light! Like, feather light. And yet very sturdy. As we talked on Sunday a tube of linen sew around would make puttting on and off easier. You may not care, but when you tie on the linen strip it leaves an large knot on the back of your neck. It's...

We use tea lights. You can remove them from the tin cup they come in. We have them in glass votive cups with in glass paneled lanterns. Tea lights last about 8 hours. If a lantern were to fall and shatter there would be a bigger issue with broken glass than a fire. We usually don't have the lantern ...

Tape a wide strip of file folder paper to the bottom edge of the helm. With masking tape, attach the aventail to the paper strip. Trace the line where the aventail attaches to the paper.. This is now the bottom edge of your leather. Remove the aventail from the paper and the paper from the helm. Fro...

Or, perhaps even harder to answer - what's the difference between a coat and a jacket? Modernly, a coat and a jacket cover the same area, however a coat is padded where as a jacket is not. Usually the coat is bulkier and the jacket is closer to the body. That's not to say that people will use those...

I've have not seen this belt of eyelets on any of their gambesons. They actually show the pourpoint under the gambeson. There are two photos right on their site, under "arming garments" (and they have only this one item), of two different gentlemen wearing the coat, one in black, one in red. One fe...

Somewhere on here Gwen pointed out that the original artwork, upon which the Rivival illustrations are based, all showed hose pointed to the garments. Hmm, that would be interesting. As to the armorer who thought leg harness should be attached to "very sturdy hose," I'd like to see someone try my u...

And FYI, Revival's arming coats are meant to hold up both arms and legs (hence the belt of eyelets around the hips), whereas the sleeveless pourpoint is just for the legs, obviously. Klaus I've have not seen this belt of eyelets on any of their gambesons. They actually show the pourpoint under the ...

SCA is purportedly a "Big tent" organization, allowing people freedom to explore a multitude of aspects of history. Well, the big-top just got bigger. Atlantia has adopted WMA as an A&S activity. The first demo was at Kingdom Arts & Sciences Fair a couple of weeks back. Was included at MKAOD (Mddle...

On one of the archery lists that I am on, people have talked about hanging fabric from their arms to deflect arrows. Apparently 2-3 layers of free hanging fabric will pretty much stop most arrows. from keeping power. They have discussed trying it out with combat archers as a defense against other a...
