David, I don't think that the number of people attending each class was great, but I thin kthat the numebr of clases as a whole, as well as the number of arts and non-heavy fighting actvities at Pennsic are indicative of a major turn in what happens there as a microcosm of SCA activity as a whole. ...

Years ago Brian Price sold solid fiberglass shield blanks- they weighed a TON. You don't need to edge a fiberglass-covered wooden shield. Just round the edges of the shield a bit with a file. Resulting edge is not damaging to our weapons. Looks much more period. That is the method my squire Ingram ...

Vitus, I have made several fiberglass shields. They work but you are going to get more milage out of a wood shield by using a metal channel on the top and front edge and then gorilla glue a leather edge over the whole edge. The shield looks and acts correctly while being very durable. A fiberglass ...

Re: my thoughts on the SCA and fighting. Any comments?

I think the main reason I would probably never join the SCA is because of the combat and the associated rules on fighting. Your first sentence may have a lot to do with your fifth sentence: Why do I get such a negative response from the local SCA members when I try to promote my school and the amaz...

Drying out a stump for dishing question.

So I found a nice sized tree stump. Freshly cut, of unknown species.
How long, if at all, should I let this dry out before I form the dish and hardy holes?

What kind of gear are you looking for? If basic protective gear any decent supplier of modern fencing gear can give you what you want. Allen I'll mildly disagree with Allen, but only mildly. Modern fencing gear is made to different specifications - a lot of those blades are made for modern flick at...

Sir Gaston's Corrizina fitting question.

I've got the small/large corrizina kit from Sir Gaston. The breast plate has been cut in two and will fit fine. The back just doesn't look right. The parts that should wrap around the sides just sticks out ! It is as if there isn't enough 'dishing'. Did anyone else have this happen? What did you do ...
