Rhys: Although I am sympathetic with the trend if not the extremism of your ideas, I would like to point out that your "if bows then why not wizards" argument doesn't pan out, since you are arguing from differing suppositions than those of many of your audience. In their minds, what we are doing at ...

long heater/kite shields that cover from shin to head and it will hurt our fighting more. Why do you say so. The long shields were fairly common in period. I'm a sword and buckler man myself, but i have nothing against the longs shields. In my mind, longer shields would be better than short shields...

Would removing the "combatant" component relieve your opposition to having people participate as archers? What I am suggesting is a "gallery" or galleries from where those who would may shoot missiles onto the field in support of their "side". Placed strategically, the archers wouldn't even need ar...

The good news: I get to practice using almost all of good Sir Rhys' suggestions. The bad: I only get to do it with 20 guys or so at a time, at best. They are great guys, but still I would like to have full on battles. I would only make a few additions and alterations, based on my experience. 1) Woun...

I study the German school, I use a modified version of it for SCA- style (the the Avalon variant of it) combat. I have been told that I have become fairly competent with it. It can be used with good success against everything but sword and shield. Against a good sword and shield man, your chances of...

Therion Arms still up and about?

Several months ago -- before Pennsic -- I placed an order at Therion arms. He said that he put it into the pipeline, but one of the peices was going to take a few weeks. Since that point, I have tried to contact him several times with no response. Now, i have always had good luck with Hal, so does a...

Thank you, Thorvaldr. I had a great time with you guys. I think you have a fun group. If nothing else, Freiman's greeting was excellen: "Welcome to Bavaria -- Have a beer!"

It brought a tear to my eye.

(As did some of the combat, I am a bit contused from one of my fights with Cadogan)

Well, it is a month later, and I have returned to Japan. Now that I have a better grasp of the theory, I get to spend the next few years working on the execution. I got to fight alongside some Tuchux at the Champions and Allies tournament last year. They seemed like decent blokes to me. I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but, for my part, I don't mind bargrills on helms that were historically openfaced. I can tune them out with no problem. What I hate are grills on things like great helms. Gosh....I wish for SCA standard combat that full visors were proof against face thrusts.......

Humor in Medieval Fighting Manuals

Okay, between McBane's "Duelling Whoremaster" stories and Silver's "Cob's Traverse", I am putting up the Brits as the funniest of the fechtbuch writers. Are there any contenders? For any who have not read McBane's "Expert Swordman's Companion", I cannot recommend it enough if for nothing other than ...

1) No blade orientation. You have to practice with a real sword to gain that, a thick line on a cuddle is no where near the same. Even a wood waster will not teach you how to cut properly; you need a sharp sword and a target. 2) Lack of knowledge on how arms work against armor. That is what most of...
