Man, that article takes me back. I had that old Dragon magazine. I read it back before I knew that SCA heaving fighting even existed. It looked pretty cool to me. I can see potential for a practice tool for heavy rights for accuracy. Place a few "targets" on each other and then work on your shot acc...

Okay, I was being a little silly, but I think (using my all-seeing internal eye to second guest a master) that he would focus on 1) Attack, almost certainly through zornhau from the vom tag, it being the most basic and instinctive of moves. I think the focus would be on a) zornhau followed by thrust...

And I agree: that is a very cool way to view a short seminar.

I've just returned from Guy Windor's seminar on Fiore longsword. It was excellent. My impression of him as a martial artist was that he was a knowledgeable and skilled practioner, and as a teacher he was focused and worked hard to never waste a minute of my time (and made sure that I and my classmat...

Disatisfied, but doing something about it

For the past few years, along with my Avalon/SCA heavy fighting, I have had a serious interest in the various styles of Western Martial Arts, including dagger, sword and buckler, and, most particularly, German longsword. Although I have applied myself with some diligence to these styles, I cannot ca...

We use it quite a lot with no problems so far. Hard quillions or soft quillions don't make much of a difference. We don't bother to mark the grip point on the quillions, since in Avalon, you can grab the blade so long as you don't let it pull or twist in your hand. Whether longswords were sharp at t...

Ah, as I have probably mentioned, it is sort of traditional around here that, during a bear pit, if there is a double kill, the two fighters team up and fight the next guy together.

Here in Avalon, we always have to be cautious about our practice time. We get one practice a week here in Tokyo, if we are lucky and the weather gods smile on us. Most people have trouble even doing pell work during the week (I mean, where can you do it? Inside is too cramped; outside disturbs folks...

Robyn is going to be really angry with me about this. The reason I am doing this is that several folks told me something like "There are going to be folks gunning for her because she's famous." Seriously? I can hardly imagine such shameful behaviour. For all that she has the heart of a lion, she is...

Thanks, Freiman, but I think the shipping would be prohibitive. I need long-term production. I will talk to him about it, though.

In the meantime, anyone else. This could be a good gig. Skilled, dependable? You could have a dedicated market for these guantlets.

Incidently, should you decide you need a set of full gauntlets, Ashcraft Baker is the only armourer I know that makes decent, affordable, and reliably produced guantlets your size. Also plate legs and arms for that matter. Is there anything you particularly need. It looks like you have a full kit, b...

Looking good, Robyn. Keep it up. I really hope that you one day get the chance to train with the Avalon folks. You've got a great attitude, and you would fit right in over here, sizewise. What bothers me most about watching these are the blatantly contrived and unlikely fight setups. What I'm talking about are staged attacks done in stop motion where the "volunteer from the audience" is told how to react, or worse yet, given no chance to react at all! It could well be as you say; ho...

Heavy combat vs. screaming, spinning showboating

I've got issues, I'll admit. From time to time, I get to practice with martial artists over here in Asia, sometimes in full heavy kit, sometimes using Lancelot Chan's RSW's (bofferish, but with realist weight and good handling characteristics). And I have noticed a peculiar mental reaction to some o...
