Let me throw my 9 ft spear.

When we were modifying the SCA rules to see what we wanted to keep for Avalon we tested this idea out. Please believe me when I say that you don't want to do this. Ouch.

Looking for spring steel/hardened high-carbon gaunts

I would appreciate a recommendation for a _reliable_ armourer to make a pair of hardened spring steel/hardened high carbon steel guantlets suitable for SCA-style combat. I am willing to pay a reasonable amount, but I need them sometime in the next four months. Any takers?

Willing Pell,

Could you PM me about this? If it is one of the Avalon folks who bailed, I should be able to help. Also, there is a good chance that it was a communications malfunction; they happen all the time with us. Maybe not, but let's discuss it.

If you want realistic boffer combat, the best source by far is RSW (m). Lance has put a lot of effort in modeling sword balance and handling characteristics in a safe boffer. But like I said, the boffers shown are good fun. And, I believe, they can be used to learn a lot of techniques, and they are ...

Yep, but trust me, I have done both and the superlight boffers screw you up even more. The rattan is not that much heaver, although the balance is usually pretty screwed up. Like I said, they are fun, but if you aren't careful they can really mess with your form. There is a certain amount of pressur...

Ah, so they have adapted the Japanese sports chanbara stuff. I've got some of their earlier gears. It is light, but good fun. Unfortunately, it is so light your technique tends to get very sloppy. I wish him the best of luck with the business, though. I seen future heavy fighters.

New spring steel arms -- my oh my

Ladies and Gentlemen, my new Hedgecock spring steel arms just came in the mail. Couldn't be sweeter if you dipped 'em in honey. I've been doing the happy dance.

One step closer to my goal of having just one authentic looking kit.

I second the vote for Lanolin -- it goes under the name of "Lanotec" -- and for cleaning your armour by fighting in it a lot. Rusty chain is a sign of slackness. :)

Wanted: a way to contact Master Knuut

A couple of weeks ago, I contacted him about ordering a stainless aventail. He sent me the shipping info. I placed the order and sent the down payment. Since then I haven't heard from him. Now, he doesn't seem the type to skip out, so has anyone heard of him having communication difficulties (comput...

Jeff is correct though, once the package is out of USPS hands its no longer something you can file a claim on. Yet both a friend and myself have both successfully made insurance claims, and EMS (Global Express) comes with insurance automatically (I believe something like 400 dollars with $2/100 up ...

Attention Armourers! Shipping to Japan

I've posted this before, but the problem still comes up, and I'm sick to death of people casting thousands of dollars worth of gear to the fates and the whimsy of the postal service. For whatever reason, many US postal employees will not admit that they have both overseas tracking and insurance on p...

This is an important milestone for the Far West. It is always a Good Thing (tm) to get the local population into the SCA, rather than remaining completely dependent on the vagaries of the US military, and having "one of your own" in a position of honour will surely make recruitment easier. Well, ac...

Well, as one of the long term gaijin over here, I have seen a fair number of baronial tourneys. I have to say that I rather like our system. It gets us a nice mix of talents into leadership, and encourages greater participation in the arts. If we were to choose our leaders on the basis of realism, I...

I, too, must choose skill, but with the following caveat: I want to make every effort to make the skills I acquire to be historically authentic as our combat models allow. For this reason the armour and the equipment is very important to me. Your gear affects how you fight (at least in a real fight)...

I like plate as proof because you need to really think about your targeting. Well, that and, in the end, it often comes down to daggers. Fun, fun, fun. We end up with some great bouts like pole axe vs. longsword (with dagger), in which the two end up engaging, then grappling, then dropping the pole-...

Overhand spear and (really big) roundshield used to be the style of Lord Corwyn here in Japan. He eventually became quite proficient with it. He also kept a long knife for those times when his opponent decided to go nose to nose.
