Wouldn't shooting for the chinks in armor negate the purpose of wearing protective gear in the SCA, i.e. to prevent injury? All I can say is that it hasn't been even a minor problem for us so far. That said, we are a very small group, and the situation may change greatly in a larger group. For us, ...

Two big thumbs up for optional rules sets. So far, they ahve worked great for us. One of our optios is "plate is proof" meanig any blow that strikes plate does not count as a telling blow. It maks you really thinik about your shot placemet. Lots of wrestling, too.

Hi folks: Sorry for the many errors in both this and my previous message. I'm having to use a work computer. It is not private, and I am under serious time pressure. When talking about 14th century gear, set your babel fish to translate any instances of "gambeson" as "arming cote". As for pointing t...

Thanks for all the great advice, folks, although I guess we're all sort of in the dark on this one. The problem I've found with pointing to the 14th century arming coats is the all seem too long, and the coat-tails would be caught beneath the thigh armour. Given how closely fitting the leg armour se...

Hanging 14th century legs

Once again, I try to pull all of my gear into the same time period. I can see how you can hang legs from an arming jacket in the 15th century, but I'm not sure how they did it in the 14th century. The jackets seem to long to use as an arming point, and Gwen says that the pourpoint attachment doesn't...

Lord Rainald as a rapier fighter? I don't know. I just can't see it. Not enough armour, not enough bruises, not enough opportunities to pound your opposition. Although he may have to give up sword and shield, I have great confidence that he'll find some way to make his mark on the field, as well as ...

We fight in the cold like real men. Well, like real man who have no better option. Actually, winter is the best time for practice. Since a high target shot always outranges a lower target, with all other things being equal, you won't see lower leg shots as often as one might think. They would almost always be reserved for the close fight. This would have the additional benefit of making ranging a factor in the game. Our experi...

Avalon Battle Rules -- Comments sought

Greetings to all from the land of the Rising Sun. As I have often mentioned in the past, Avalon uses many different rules sets to model combat. Nobody is more surprised than I that fighters can keep up with them all, but they seem to well enough. In any case, we have reached the point that we need t...

Yeah, but Aaron, you just have really good armour. It can be tough to judge in plate. Nothing wrong with that. Just keep in mind that it is tough to judge and all will be well. I have a place on the side of my milanese kit that, when struck, is impossible for me to judge. I either have to listen for...

1. Difficult to imagine, legality issues aside. The sword would have the opponent's hand attached to it. Grabbing the pommel would be a difficult task, and grabbing the hand would be illegal based on my understanding of the rules of the list. Strangely enough, I was in a situatino very much like th...

A different class of thrusting tip

I've just made up a 4.5 foot great axe. I put a thrusting spike at the head, and a butt spike at the foot, but am going to handle them differently than usual. I wanted to be able to simulate a regular unspiked/butt spiked axe, which would have been ineffective against armour, but damaging against "s...

You've got to advertise to some of the Avalon guys. Drop buy the BBS sometime and say that you've got a slot open. Show them pics of some of the things you have done. If nothing else, you won't have to mess with shipping.

I've done business with Steve several times now, and he has always come through. Very reliable, with a great quality product. There are two interpretations for implementing counted blows as well. 1) As, Juliana described, fight non-stop until the number of blows is landed. Aaron,

It depends on the kind of counted blows that you mean? First to a set number? Until a certain number of blows have been thrown by both parties? You'll get to try a version of the former at Black Hole here in January.

Alright! My Mandrake case-hardened legs have arrived, and life is grand!
