This is my favorite bit: One of them, Ju Fa Yue Yi had told me on a forum months ago that his friends wondered how I would match up with them, for they found my style to be "weird and questionable" on videos. So I took the chance to prove myself. We went to the old gym in the university and started ...

It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. I wish I could have been there, too! I have a couple of questions: 1) You folks have an intricate system for calculating points. Do you calculate them as you fight, or just from the video afterwards? 2) You mentioned that you could be more open about your spa...

Aaron, you're going to fit right in up here. You need to come up to Avalon practice again on a day when we aren't focussing on the new folks. We practiced with the armour as worn, plate as proof rule last sunday and had a blast. Also did armour as worn, counted blows. All good fun. One thing we are ...

Hmm. I've been trying to think of game alternatives, and I think that I've come up with one that I would like to try. From what I can see, part of the problem lies with the idea of "free range" archers, those that run around and snipe at will. One of the suggestions to counter this is that they shou...

Aaron, I'm not sure how well strapping your guantlet around your pole arm might work in the SCA, but you shouldn't do it when you practice with us. There's no rule against it or anything, its just that we do more wrestling around in Avalon. Ask Phelan about Sunday, when he and I ended up exchanging ...

This is for convenience and lack of enough full gauntlets since some of us fight with quillion or tsuba on our swords. Had we enough gauntlets to go around we would allow switching the weapon to the other hand and dropping the shield. This is one of the reasons we've pretty much given up on half-gu...

Don't come to _any_ conclusions after one fighter practice. It's all too new. The first time anyone, big or small, messes with armour its just exhausting. You don't know how to move, your balance is off, and just bucking it on is will wear you out. This particularly true if people are trying to get ...

Sir Gason: I can understand in situations where it is a safety hazard, but in others, I wish they'd use metal more ofen. Hell, even just stiff material. Look at Troy. Nobody moves right, and half the time the "metal" flexes. I don't think its just people like us noticing this; it affects the percept...

Kampfringen and modern wrestling
Hi folks, I've been trying to see if there have been any influences between kampfringen and modern sports wrestling. I haven't seen anything like a direct line of descent, but I'm am curious to learn if there was any crossover between these two seemingly disparate martial arts. Thoughts? Ideas? Sugg...

Longsword is useful from time to time. We've had no big safety problems so far. It's even more useful when we are using plate as proof laws. By the way, is the SCA using half-sword to make slashing blows. From time to time I hear comments that indicate they might be. I haven't seen any indication th...

We had a new fellow visit our practice the other day who was about the best first-practice fighter I've run across. His background was heavily Muay Thai and Kali Escrima, and it showed. Lance, you've got guys coming from all over just to fight you. I'm wanting to make the trip myself. We've been doing a lot of I.33 over here in Japan as well, using your gear for practice. Good fun. Greetings and gestures
Sorry, two questions in one day.
What would be an appropriate greeting and greeting gesture for the mid-1400s in medieval England. Anyone know? Unfortunately, being in Japan means that my research methods are extremely limited, and I haven't found a good website yet.
Thank you.

Pignose visor: acceptable timespan?
Folks,
I've read somewhere that the pignose visor on a bascinet was popular up until 1425 or so. Does anyone have a later reference to a pignose? While, yes, I know someone could have worn their grandfather's, I was wondering if there is any reasonable documentation.

I respectfully disagree. I prefer counted blows in which you can keep the pressure on. "Resetting" after each good blow just seems to throw a wet blanket on the fun. The ability necessary to keep fighting after being struck is a different skills set that counted blows rules can help you acquire. We'...

I want to fight in turnshoes. I don't mind the slipperiness, nor the lack of arch-support; I just get tired of having my toes trod upon by other guys in heavy boots. Heh, I was being photographed once, so I got myself up as authentically as I could. I did an over the leg takedown and through the guy...
