This is my favorite bit: One of them, Ju Fa Yue Yi had told me on a forum months ago that his friends wondered how I would match up with them, for they found my style to be "weird and questionable" on videos. So I took the chance to prove myself. We went to the old gym in the university and started ...

It looks like you guys had a lot of fun. I wish I could have been there, too! I have a couple of questions: 1) You folks have an intricate system for calculating points. Do you calculate them as you fight, or just from the video afterwards? 2) You mentioned that you could be more open about your spa...

Aaron, you're going to fit right in up here. You need to come up to Avalon practice again on a day when we aren't focussing on the new folks. We practiced with the armour as worn, plate as proof rule last sunday and had a blast. Also did armour as worn, counted blows. All good fun. One thing we are ...

Hmm. I've been trying to think of game alternatives, and I think that I've come up with one that I would like to try. From what I can see, part of the problem lies with the idea of "free range" archers, those that run around and snipe at will. One of the suggestions to counter this is that they shou...

Aaron, I'm not sure how well strapping your guantlet around your pole arm might work in the SCA, but you shouldn't do it when you practice with us. There's no rule against it or anything, its just that we do more wrestling around in Avalon. Ask Phelan about Sunday, when he and I ended up exchanging ...

This is for convenience and lack of enough full gauntlets since some of us fight with quillion or tsuba on our swords. Had we enough gauntlets to go around we would allow switching the weapon to the other hand and dropping the shield. This is one of the reasons we've pretty much given up on half-gu...

Don't come to _any_ conclusions after one fighter practice. It's all too new. The first time anyone, big or small, messes with armour its just exhausting. Greetings and gestures

Sorry, two questions in one day.

What would be an appropriate greeting and greeting gesture for the mid-1400s in medieval England. Anyone know? Unfortunately, being in Japan means that my research methods are extremely limited, and I haven't found a good website yet.

Thank you.

Pignose visor: acceptable timespan?

Folks,

I've read somewhere that the pignose visor on a bascinet was popular up until 1425 or so. Does anyone have a later reference to a pignose? While, yes, I know someone could have worn their grandfather's, I was wondering if there is any reasonable documentation.

I respectfully disagree. I prefer counted blows in which you can keep the pressure on. "Resetting" after each good blow just seems to throw a wet blanket on the fun. The ability necessary to keep fighting after being struck is a different skills set that counted blows rules can help you acquire. We'...

Honestly, nobody really intimidates me. I've had my butt kicked by people so many times that I'm pretty much numb to it. This could possibly be the only advantage to being a middle-rank fighter.

Groups of fighters intimidate me. I tend to become indecisive and then lock up.
