Guys like Nissan have been in the SCA since the mid to late 70’s and I pretty sure they started with the 2 inches above the top of the knee rule. So if they did have total leg targeting it was back before then. I joined the SCA in the fall of '73 and fought my first season in '74. Up that far nor...

True enough . . . given the power of a greatsword, IRL a fighter would do better to toss aside or sheathe the broadsword and slash through the opposition with the two-hander.

I suspect that the style, like that of using a pair of swords, is a SCAdianism.

To me, it's common sense. I doubt that you could aim even a ballista with the kind of accuracy you can get with a bow or crossbow. And again, factoring in the destructive potential they represent . . . such as several previous posts have posited. The reason for lower leg blows being disallowed in ar...

So-Called 'Crusader' / 'Christian Madu' Style - Historical?

Partly because I have heard from many quarters that the style of fighting armoured combat with a pair of pretty much matched swords is not historical, and partly because I've never been able to manage a regular sword in my left hand, I've authorized with two-weapon using the so-called "Crusader...

One Cool Move

Just about his coolest move was during the St. Aiden Tourney. He was mixing it up at close quarters with his hammer, and managed to draw his sword and smite his opponent with a left-handed reverse-grip blow. By reverse grip I mean that he was holding the sword in a grip like a dagger, with the blade...

There was an Atlantian fighter who had an SCA version of that sort of "gauntlet sword." I believe the concept was Persian. I think it was Duke Achbar ibn Murad, but I'm not sure. the grip was more or less perpendicular to the line of the blade. A real sword of that design might not be very...

Were you to go for the two eagles, I would suggest having them respectant (facing each other).

Another distinction would be to divide the shield per pale gules and argent, and have the eagles rising respectant counterchanged.

The only fighter I know well who uses a center-grip oval is Baron Mungoe Maglinchey of Marinus. His shield (a Celtic design) has a horizontal grip. It enables him to brace the shield against his arm and hold it over his head in a high guard, when he fights from his knees. It also enables him to exte...

A Rant of my Own

It's hard to imagine that there's a mainstream or a baseline in a group such as the SCA, whose very premise assumes a degree of eccentricity. But I think there is such, and for those, getting heraldry registered is indeed a part of the game. I salute them. Then there are those who for a number of re...

I'm 57, born in February of 1952. And you, Aaron, can attest to my active status, as can several others on the Archive.

I knew of someone out in the western reaches who continued to fight into his 60s, but that was some time ago. One of the Houghtons, as I recall.
