The final was between Sir Vladimir and Earl Robert. Best of three, with no restrictions on weapons. Sir Vladimir, as is his wont, fought with glaive the entire time. Earl Robert fought with sword and shield. In the first match, Sir Vladimir struck Earl Robert on the head while Earl Robert simultaneo...

That's navyed.
Not exclusively. Press gangswere used to impress men into armies and navies both. In Britain, it was pretty much restricted after 1800 to the navy; and that's the association most of us make.

Two sequential posts, I know; but I've two very different things to say. I started fighting in AS IX. It was indeed in AS X that the ruling that women could not be excluded from heavy combat was made. At the time, there was a provision that those whose concept of chivalry prevented them from hitting...

Women do not have the right to fight. They have to earn the privilege the same way men do: They have to overcome their fear of brutal pain, obtain arms, and then ply them. Ya beat me to it. I was ready to post, 'How did women gain the right to fight heavy? Same as men did, by gearing up, training, ...

On Cloven Fruits
There was a rather extensive discussion on the subject of cloven fruits on Atlantia's mailing list recently. Opinions on the custom ran from Well, it can be neat if done with grace , to Aroint! Let it Lie! It is indeed a purely Scadian custom, invented by the lady to whom Duke Gavin refers, in Carol...

We have such ladies in Atlantia also . . . and they are by no means all Duchesses.
Remember that Arthurian tale in which the answer to "What do Women Want?" was "Sovereignty."

Riding Sidesaddle
Ladies, Seeing an article online about the construction and use of a Mediaeval style sidesaddle set me to wondering. When riding on a Mediaeval sidesaddle, your feet are essentially on a step. On a more modern sidesaddle, your left foot is in a conventional stirrup. In both cases, you've no foot on ...

That armour, made for the Prince of Wales in 1608, stands in stark contrast to another armor made for King Hendy VIII around 1540 (which is also shown on that site. The Prince's suit is a riot of embellishment and decoration. The King's is remarkable in its simplicity. Both are attributed to the Roy...

Being an attendant on the Queen can indeed be interesting. But it can also be boring. It can be exciting. It can also be tiresome. It can be glamourous. It can also be - well, mundane! As several others have pointed out, a lot depends on the personality of the Queen herself and the sort of people wi...

Re: Lady-in-waiting - what do they do?
I know that the Queen should never be alone, so no one can claim her dishonored (or something along those lines) The dictum that the Queen should never be alone 'so that no one can claim her dishonoured' is less a factor in the modern world than BitD. The idea of that was, that if the Queen always ...
