BVM is shorthand for the Blessed Virgin Mary. I had not known her by that title "Imperitrix" before, only "Regina." As for Carmina Burana , it's a set of songs - two sets, actually, from an early 13th-century German manuscript (found in 1803) from the Benedictine abbey of Benedik...

What Empress are you saluting? The image looks like a conventional BVM, but she's usually thought of as Regina Coeli.

Is it Fortuna Immperatrix Mundi, such as is serenaded in "Carmina Burana"?

I don't know Russian as such, but I've read that a lot of Russian terms were borrowed from French. the "Jack" in the Russian decks might be a valet as well.

Interesting (to me anyway) that the Kings of hearts, spades, and clubs look like czars, but the king of diamonds looks Turkish.

In mottoes, the EST is often omitted, this would shorten the "needle is my weapon" phrase to ACUS ARMA MEA.

Given the propensity for abbreviation, would it be appropriate to elide the ARMA and MEA into ARMEA?

If so you'd pare it down to ACUS ARMEA.

Notre-Dame probably looks a sight better than it did when I saw it in 1967. They hadn't started to clean it up yet, and the interior was dark, gloomy, and . . . Gothic. And at the time I'd never heard of the Saint-Chapelle. If I ever get back to Paris that will be high on my must-see list.
