I've made surcoats and 'rocks for people in really high quality velvet that held up well. For SCA fighting, pile protects the woven base from the typical 'crush' and abrasion damage inflicted by rattan swords. My husband's wool mohair velvet waffenrock held up really well for years. Don't use the ac...

My husband is an excellent two sword fighter. He fights like Gavin describes - long swords that do not touch ground when freely swung, point back, hilt forward, ready to throw. He is a tall lefty, so usually crossblocks a lot. He will often crossblock the first shot before going into a flurry. He fi...

BTW, I was the one who researched double headed eagles and provided documentation that they were to the Germans like Fleur de lis are to the French. I provided an inch thick packet of documentation showing many non-noble and minor nobles with double headed eagles on their devices, often with other o...

What did you have to do to get color on color registered, Ursula? I had to find a bunch of different examples of black charges on colored fields from period heraldry. This happened occasionally in many places in our period-- my file has examples from Germany, Wales, etc. I see a lot of metal on met...

Who is going to Potrero?
The Company of St Martins will be at our usual spot next to Aten Royal. Feel free to drop by and say hi to Ritter Hirsch and I. We have a good sized period encampment. Ours is a rectangular 20x30 natural canvas with period ball finials and gold/black banners. There is also a huge red and blue twin p...

I'm only 50 and don't plan on quitting any time soon. I will be able to fight with my oldest son this fall, but it will be 5 yrs before both boys, my husband and I can fight as a family. I empathize with the lack of movement. Since my knee blew out, I find myself being very conscious of footwork and...

I'd be interested to see how a kali fighter would do in the SCA . Also thanks for the videos. They are very fast. But I watched a LOT of utube videos and most blows are arm, with occasionally a little bit of shoulder. At least here in So CA, most folks would shrug them off as too light in SCA comba...

John, you should consider hooking up with the Renaissance Military Society (RMS). I'm pretty sure their charter covers from about 1450 to 1600 or so, though most are early to late 16th c.

Most of the Kali I've seen is luckily only arm with a little shoulder. SCA blows using proper technique would probably be a lot harder.

Our personas are somewhat aging, though more slowly than our period counterparts. My persona is actually younger than I am. In period, it is unlikely a 50 yr old woman would have 15 and 11 yr old sons. As old fashioned country nobles we are not totally unaware of current fashions, but we also rather...

I find it interesting that the SCA in the South are wearing T-shirt/tabard armor and complaining about heat, but there is a sizeable group of live steel combatants in South Florida in the Adrian Empire that wear much more armor than the average SCA fighter in any region. There is cultural aspect of ...

Killian, I designed my husband's pants, and showed Logan how to make the z-twist slashes, but Logan sewed them up for us when he had 6 different leather sewing machines in his shop.
