I've made surcoats and 'rocks for people in really high quality velvet that held up well. For SCA fighting, pile protects the woven base from the typical 'crush' and abrasion damage inflicted by rattan swords. My husband's wool mohair velvet waffenrock held up really well for years. Don't use the ac...

My husband is an excellent two sword fighter. He fights like Gavin describes - long swords that do not touch ground when freely swung, point back, hilt forward, ready to throw. He is a tall lefty, so usually crossblocks a lot. He will often crossblock the first shot before going into a flurry. He fi...

What did you have to do to get color on color registered, Ursula? I had to find a bunch of different examples of black charges on colored fields from period heraldry. This happened occasionally in many places in our period-- my file has examples from Germany, Wales, etc. I see a lot of metal on met...

Who is going to Potrero?

The Company of St Martins will be at our usual spot next to Aten Royal. Feel free to drop by and say hi to Ritter Hirsch and I. We have a good sized period encampment. Ours is a rectangular 20x30 natural canvas with period ball finials and gold/black banners. There is also a huge red and blue twin p...

I think the most variance is with rules on how thrusts to the head/face are taken/thrown. In Caid and Atenveldt, for example, you can shoot a spear thrust to the side of someone's head (locally called "earholing" by some of our more colorful spearmen). This shot is typically both given or ...

John, you should consider hooking up with the Renaissance Military Society (RMS). I'm pretty sure their charter covers from about 1450 to 1600 or so, though most are early to late 16th c.

They may also have pointers to sites in the Bay area.

Our personas are somewhat aging, though more slowly than our period counterparts. My persona is actually younger than I am.
