Not the point. Is the paintball player going to mock soldiers and other people who do real firearm training, saying that because they don't do full speed full force shooting at each other his martial art is superior to theirs? Is he going to insist that paintballing is just as legitimate in terms o...

But fighting in full harness or heavy padding changes the dynamic of the fight so much that it does not resemble blossfechten. And cutting with a sword at somebody wearing plate harness or transitional harness does not resemble harnischfechten. For a standard 15th c street costume, the upper body l...

Greg, I do want to assure you that I think most of us understand that there are groups in the SCA and Adria and I'm sure WMA and ARMA that end up with newbies teaching newbies and never really raise to a level mastery because they don't get the right teachers and perhaps do not really have a good in...

I don't know what students of ARMA you have met, but you certainly didn't meet me or any of the people in ARMA I have met. I think we'd all enjoy meeting up and fighting it out. And then, we'd all probably get along better, not necessarily agree, but there is just something about the respective you...

But when sparring with waster or steel blunts we try to pull our forceful strikes before they hit the other guy. We swing/strike with force but we don't hit each other with force. Unfortunately without actually hitting with force, you loose some of the reality of how to move the sword in returns an...

In ARMA we train for the purpose of earnest combat. In the middle ages and renaissance they learned how to fight, practiced, and trained without killing their training partners. We train like they train. How can you train like they train without being in the same clothing/armor/footwear as they wor...

[quote="iomtalach"] But I am holding back when I do heavy. I'm afraid of hurting someone. I've hurt a few people already. When I fight with a spear, I feel like I'm moving in molasses, I am going so slow and careful. I'm pillow-tapping people in the face. quote] A lot of this depends on th...

Kelly, Any of us Peers who've been around long enough, and especially who've lived in different areas, know that not all groups are equal. Its a social club, and the culture is often defined by the membership and often by the leadership. The only thing that is missing is that in many areas, the &quo...

My observations about the ARMA students I've met (caviat, this is from a sample of about 4 people who are not the higher end instructor types): The ARMA folk I've met think they are going 1/2 speed, when most are really 1/4 speed or less and they aren't using proper body mechanics for even the basic...

One of the biggest draws for young fighters is the lure of a safe and honorable 'gang'. A martially-centered SCA household headed by an achieved knight/count/duke that provides a lot of ancillary support, strong rules, a strong visual presence (heraldry), and a family-like camaraderie is like psych...

A lot of people our age (mid to late 40s) aren't interested or able to start a new heavy duty physical activity. Don't altogether discount people over 30 or 35. <snip>In my local SCA rapier practice there's another new fighter who's considerably older than I am. Locally the SCA doesn't have much ra...

Peach recipes?
I am doing a feast at the end of August. We have a peach tree full of peaches - tiny, but tasty. I can poach and freeze them in our box freezer. I found one peach tart recipe in The Good Housewife's Jewell. Does anyone have other sources? Meat sauces? Period cobblers? I may have some plums available...

Surely a fighter's gender is not an issue until people start making it one? Possibly, but I've seen some new women make it an issue - its not always the men's fault. We have a VERY female friendly practice. We are very careful with both male and female new fighters about not beating them up or bein...

David, My suggestion is to email the Baroness and explain your plight. The Baroness of Lyondemere, Dame Angelina, is a Lady of great repute and honor. I recommend that you explain your predicament and ask if the consort has duties during the year as well as the champion. For if that is so, a consort...

My advice, for its worth, would be to do absolutely nothing... physically anyway. Don't hunt him down on the field, or smack him about with a SCA legal rolling pin or anything of the sort(though that would be fun to watch). Totally agree. I do not know this lad but would hazard a guess that he may ...

Re: So how do you respond?
While it was both generous and kind of you not to respond, even though he deserved to be taken to task, I'm amazed none of the fighters or others within earshot said anything to him. Chivalry isn't just about fighting well, it is also about following a code of behavior, furthering the knightly idea...

Granted this guy sounds like an ass he could just have a very dry sense of humor. I agree with the armored vs unarmored. I just did not expect the comment. I have had some serious gender discrimination occur at work in my early days as an Engineer. The big boss excused the behavior by claiming my m...

Don't give the lout any attention at all. He doesn't deserve it. When you face him eventually, treat him without rancor or hostility, as you would any other fighter. He only wins if his attitude problems force change upon you. I won't. Don't worry. I've dealt with some very offensive chauvenists on...
