Not the point. Is the paintball player going to mock soldiers and other people who do real firearm training, saying that because they don't do full speed full force shooting at each other his martial art is superior to theirs? Is he going to insist that paintballing is just as legitimate in terms o...

Greg, I do want to assure you that I think most of us understand that there are groups in the SCA and Adria and I'm sure WMA and ARMA that end up with newbies teaching newbies and never really raise to a level mastery because they don't get the right teachers and perhaps do not really have a good in...

We teach this concept at our practice, but you can't force people to do it. Some will take it seriously and some consider fighting "just for fun".

Kelly, Any of us Peers who've been around long enough, and especially who've lived in different areas, know that not all groups are equal. My observations about the ARMA students I've met (caviat, this is from a sample of about 4 people who are not the higher end instructor types): The ARMA folk I've met think they are going 1/2 speed, when most are really 1/4 speed or less and they aren't using proper body mechanics for even the basic...

We're doing really well as a group, despite the fact that the only one that regularly shows up to practice is our only knight. Potlucks regularly have 30ish people. Potlucks, BBQs, a few beers, and "No sh** there I was" stories, are excellent ways to create that feeling of belonging and b...

One of the biggest draws for young fighters is the lure of a safe and honorable 'gang'. THere's a lot more to the SCA than swinging a stick. I think perhaps one of the reasons "recruitment" looks down is because we focus TOO heavily on that one, niche aspect. In my experience, a strong fighting community is key to the overall health of an SCA group. The SCA needs all facets ...

In our local Barony we seem to have a strong fighter population. I believe it is because the focus is on war bands and war fighting, where individual fighters don't have to be "good" to be proud of their fighting, but can get that pride by being part of a greater entity where they work tog...

I am doing a feast at the end of August. We have a peach tree full of peaches - tiny, but tasty. I can poach and freeze them in our box freezer. I would recommend that you ask someone to be your "consort for the day" of one of the Pelicans or Laurels who may not have someone fighting for them. This would not then hold for any other day, but would certainly be appreciated by many ladies who'd lords do not or no longer can fight. I w...
