At some point a Marshal can call a fight if he thinks things are dangerous but truely, it rarely gets to that. If everyone seems happy, or at least communicating in a civil way, I leave it alone. Usually if it appears that the above scenario is happening, where someone is repeatedly besting another,...

There are some opponents who's body language makes it seem like they are taking the shot and that it is good, only to find them throwing a blow at your head the second you hesitate. If someone has a pattern of doing so, I hope the Chivalry will have a talk with them. Whether they mean to or not, us...

For those coming out to Estrella, besides face thrusts, thrusts to the sides, back and top of the helm are legal here and one is expected to take it if it is a solid shot. "Nailing earholes" (an oblique shot to the side of the helm by a spearman) is a common tactic and if someone does't take one tha...

However, as I see it, everyone should assume that every blow they throw was NOT good until they get that confirmation. with respect, Malcolm I agree. In my experience, it has always been the convention to do your best to stop once you've noticed that confirmation, but to continue throwing unless yo...

youre talking about rumors right? rumors, like floating turds, should be recognized for what they are and flushed. regards logan I was being generous in my wording in that that I'd seen a trend of harder followups after what seemed to be obvious acknowledgement in tournaments and pickups, and then ...

So how do we fix this? I'm not sure. I dont' know that there is a singular fix, however feedback seems to be important. In my experience, most of the people who have general calibration issues don't normally limit that to specific events so feedback during practices seems like the best way to at le...

Yes and no. If the person does not acknowledge, don't assume, keep throwing. However in my opinion it is rude to keep throwing after someone has clearly acknowledged your victory. Its like calling someone a liar by assuming they are going to back out of their word. It would give the appearance that ...

treat it like your goal is to score as many points(hits) as possible before your opponent falls over. -Brand Generally agree with you, except with a slight modification from "falls over" to "acknowledges your victory". One fellow walked off the field and was knocked out (concussion) last summer at ...

This isn't a response to anyone in particular. Many many years ago there were slightly more than a handful of fighters that would end up in 2 hour final rounds with each other (no kidding, we timed it), and often long long bouts with others who seemed to have bested them. As one would expect, back i...

i would disagree a little with that a round sword wont feel off if its flat. when a proper blow is thrown, on edge, the wrist can only move so far and the muscles controlling that movement are much stronger than the ones controlling the wrist in the other direction. its like the amount of power you...

But history and observation can get us most of the way there, and let their ill repute grow. But could the whole cycle be stopped early if a few respected Marshals and reknowned fighters took the person aside and talked to them? In many cases, I think so. But if everyone who does that is considered...

I agree with Vitus on the "flat" issue. When a sword has shaved sides, it can actually feel/sound wrong, but if someone is using round rattan, that method won't work. If you can see the blade and the wrist, you may be able to call it flat, but otherwise an honorable fighter is at the mercy of the go...

sorry, but as i see it you are a very poor marshal based on your claims of mind reading abilities and your certainty in calling men cheaters. And you make many assumptions from a few words. You also don't know how many admitted later to me or someone else that they did know that the blows were bad....

Many doesn't mean "most". You twist my words. But definitely more than a handful. These were times when it was pretty obvious that the fighter knew they'd struck a shield into the other guy because it was a) right in front of him, b) the sound and bounceback was all wrong, and c) Some people really ...

In SCA combat, whenever you fight a person who doesn't know you, you have the option of taking the tack of the 2nd kid, and our culture says that Personal Honor protects you from any and all attempts at leveling the playing field. Is all input from another to be discarded? As a Marshal, I have ofte...

Definitely more people would be wearing shoes vs boots than you typically see on the rapier field. Glad to see more people moving to knee breeches, stockings and shoes. A small nit is that I've never seen any provenance for 16th c shirts made with yokes. Yokes show up in the late 1700s as far as I c...

I started using the single seam down the center because I see so many with such clearly shown seams. I've seen some with the double seam too, but in this period, more with the center seam. Sometimes the cut of coifs change per period, but many people treat them as generic to all periods. But some go...

Re: Non-SCA groups on NE US and eastern Canada?
Are there any non-sca recreation or LH groups in NE US and/or eastern Canada that have fighting (rattan or live-steel)? If so, how are they? I'm looking for something a little more serious, and a little less "society for concenting adults".... Thanks, J Whether SCA or Adrian Empire, each regional g...

Some people stand with their back leg so far behind them, they can't twist their hips. Blocking: I try to block most standard blows with my shield, however, I also use both active and passive blocks with my sword. I'm very short, so for some people, they'd not get many high shots unless fighting on ...

I've always wanted to put together a game of Stoolball . Apparently (and I could be wrong on this) it's a 14th Cen women's game. Forerunner of cricket and baseball. Reputedly invented by milkmaids with stools, buckets, and rocks. We played stoolball once at a break at an Adrian Empire event. It was...

It was pretty obvious from the first time I saw this video that Duke Logan's calibration was not the issue here. If I were marshalling that fight, there are shots I might have discussed with his first opponent about *after* the fight - i.e. the repeated leg shots that were unimpeded, thrown with ful...

Cunian, I also think some people don't give themselves permission to hit as hard as they can. We are fighting friends, and hitting hard as you can might hurt someone right? Radnor is so cool. He used to come down to Calafia a lot in the 'old days'. He is the one I think of when the topic of "Deeds of Arms" comes up. There are two types of crowns for square top berets. One is sewn so the pieces make an X on the top of the hat and the final piece does not fold inward, the other is where the square is very large and the ends are folded into meet at the center. In the case where it does not fold, it is 4 triangles ...

Door Hinges needed for Vintage Trailer
Do any of you think you could replicate these? A foundry told a guy on the Silver Streak Trailer list that they'd do a pair for $250. If you could do it for less than $250 per pair and in stainless you'd have some buyers. I guess they tend to break on the newer year trailers. On our older model they...
