In the past you could not expect to get squired to anyone without wearing minimal armor. Wow, so you wouldn't have been squired if you wore a nice period suit? The reason for this I feel has less to do with magnanamous testicles, and more to do with a "normal" humidity level of around 90% inthe sum...

As I remember it, the primary distinction was based on the complementary assumption that, not only was the "legged" fighter fully imobilized (unlike the ground crawling I was familiar with in my own home kingdom), but that the fighter with the advantage was entirely within his right and -expected- ...

The conduct I referred to earlier is decided and done at the same time your opponent is dropping his shield, or dropping to his knees. I have never seen where it delays fighting anymore than it would be to allow your opponent to "get comfortable" before you attack. Maybe this is even foreign in you...

I'm more likely to go out and fight pick ups or offer to fight the "by"s lately at a tourney. I'm not great, but I don't suck, but I'm not at th...

Re: What killed errantry?

Probably it was partially due to local laws, I know that later in the period, people required "papers" to travel in some areas. This was due to banditry.

But it may also have been in part due to the Plague...

like nuclear arrows, nuclear swords have no place on the field. I don't really understand this. It is mimicing getting pasted from behind, which would be more likely to be realistically devastating than how an SCA single telling blow currently works. Realistically it would be much faster and easier...

Excellent, and if this were the case with all fighters, then there would not be a problem besides the realism of tactics factor.

are you trying to get "manly chivalric combat where only people who are squared off with me can kill me" or are you trying to get "superior tactics should win out"? Personally, I'm for the manly combat in tournament, and the tactics "more real war" in melee.. theres more than enough of each to go a...

What you just described is one of the reasons why DFB is used out west, the tap tap, then the person turns and just as they recognize its an enemy they get pasted is IMHO, totally unchivalrous. If you are going let people know you are behind them, then let them get their guard up. sheesh, Juliana S...

I personally don't like DKFB. I find it unchivalrous and gamy. Now, I'll take it if its in the rules, but I won't inflict it on anyone else. But not at Interkingdom events west of the Rockies, like Estrella, Potrero, Great Western War, etc.

So it depends a lot on where you live and where you travel.

For what it is worth, I would rather have Declared Death from Behind (it is reasonably safe, but horribly discourteous, and certainly unchivalrous within the scope of our ruleset), than being shot by archers. I have two minds about this subject. 2) OTOH, I like the fact that it can change the dynamics of a melee. Especially a small one compared to wars. If you get a 100 man melee going, it would be foolish to allow a ten man strike unit to out flank you. So a commander has to have contigencies in place ...
