Maybe It's the sleep depravation or he claustraphobia of being in this tomb I work in but...

I've got a couple of helm ideas.

1 a kettle hat with a wrap around bargrill instead of plates. Hang a aventail all around it and paint the bars black. Maybe an attached cloth hood too, or instead of the aventail It would look like a period kettle hat from a distance.

The other one Aidan had a similar idea.

A reall low profile helm, just enough room for 1 layer or close cell. Covered with cloth with a coif over it. Black out the grill and you've got the "guy in just a coif look.

Whaddaya think?

How much of a pain would it be to get them pass armour inspection.

I used to fight in a kettle hat made from a no-longer-in-business armorer in Georgia. I liked the look, but reshaping the brim after every couple of practices was a real pain....

A lot of helms out there only have one layer of close-cell. I am not saying its a great thing to do though. My main idea was to create a helm that protected, then cover with a cloth coif and a maille coif, to give the "illusion of fighting in a maille coif... it was jsut a thought....

1 layer is plenty. I've fought here, In the Midrealm, at Pensic, and in Atlantia. fought people from all over the world, in mild steel and stinless helms 1 layer is plenty.

Insted of adding form try adding a slightly padded arming hood and a coif. Their more period take the ring out and make the helm less bulky looking.

Of course everybody has different bodies, and different helms. So it might not be enough for the way your helm fits your head. What gague is your helm? If it's 16 ga mild like the first one i ever fought in then yea you migh need more. But for most folks in most areas 1 layer is just fine.

Wow!
That would be distinctly bad advice in the area where I am. Not that it happens often, but everytime I get a dent in my helm that goes very deep. I am thankful for the extra padding. Concussions are not fun

I would thing the helm would work as an anvil & the rattan stick would work as a hammer, requiring the maille to be repaired often. If you used welded, solid, or riveted rings, it would work & look fairly cool.

Blackening bars on a helm helps a lot.

Good point! I was going to use maille to cover up my neck plate on my kettle, but this is a good point. think I'll use padded cloth instead.

Weld the links of the chainmail together, and make it out of 14ga steel. When the marshall inspects it, you can prove that its better than 16ga, and has no gaps over 1".

I saw a helm with a coif over it last pennsic, didn't get close enough to see if it was welded, butted, or riveted, but it looked like it was made out of 14ga 3/8"ID.. I think its a cool idea but the one I saw looked a little silly... kinda large and bulbuos.. like a spun top helm wearing a coif.

You'll have to pad the helm anyway [which will show through bars, and obviate any airflow advantage], and a smooth skirt will let your mail last longer, and also weigh a lot less than barstock. A 14ga brim with a rolled edge should stnd up just fine to meridian calibration.
Glue cloth to your metal skirt under the mail, and it'll look more like just a padded coif...
