here's a few pics of the helm I've been working on.. this is the ringing one I was talking about in another post. lemme know what ya'll think...

here's the pics

three quarter view, I think it sits a little high, need to adjust the liner.

side view... making a face plate to fit over that nose is gonna suck

front view, the brim is a bit crooked and one side is slightly more dished than the other.. oh well, unevenly shaped munition pieces are prolly very period.

inside view showing the leather liner.

all i have left to do is build the face plate so I can use it (perf-plate for rapier combat and fighting with liveblades), and I'm going to try riveting some leather to the under side of the brim to dampen the ringing when it gets hit.

made from 16ga mild steel and 18ga for the cheeks. two piece skull and two piece brim.. the comb is part of the dished halfs that I flattened again to make the comb, then welded the two together along the top of the comb.. then I welded some 1/4" round stock to the top of that to keep it from getting hacked into little pieces.

Don't tell me that's your first plate project. Cause if it is I'm quittin.

Man that looks good. I really like your arming cap thingie too. Is it like those 15thc swiss ones.

Man that looks good. Just goes to show how much nicer a helmet looks when the guts are historical instead of blue camping pad.

You've done some wonderful work, even though it is not period... Viking period that is Image...

Nice work.

The brim does not look too crisp in terms of line. This may be the light doing odd things with the photo.

Have you thought of making the rapier legal faceplate as a falling buffe? Now there would be an "interesting" project.

Dweezle,

Awesome work. That is one sweet helm. How exactly did you make it? Did you use one piece of metal, and hammer it over a stake or make two halves or. . .? The leather straps on the inside are also very cool.

the brim is a little uneven in places, mostly in the front cause the brim overlapped slightly... I was going to trim it so it didn't and bridge the gap with a weld but decided to just weld the top and bottom of the overlap to make it a little more ridgid in the front.. tried to get it even but with two layers of metal and a couple welds, it didn't really want to move. oh well.

not my first project... I think its my fourth helm, also made a finger gauntlet and a few other small pieces of plate armor... I tried once before to make a helm out of two dished halfs but didn't really know what i wanted to make when i started it and when i did decide, the halfs I had welded together weren't really the right shape to make what I wanted so I gave them away... i haves sort of a journal of my experiences with making plate armour... its online and a little outdated but it can be found by going to my site and clicking on the thing that says "plate armour journal" or something like that...

here's the link to my site..

its made from 7 pieces of metal all welded together... the brass bolts in the picture are just holding in the liner and holding the leather articulations for the cheeks.
here's a list of the metal parts...

2 halves for the top of the helm.

a 1/4" metal rod welded to the top of the comb

2 pieces for the brim

2 plates for the cheeks/sides of the head/ears

I started with 2 sort of football shaped pieces for the top halves, dished them.. i'm not really sure how to describe what I did to make the comb, maybe I'll draw up a thing with pictures... it basicaly started with two a halves that were a little large, I measured my head to see what needed to be done to get them to fit then cut away the extra material where the center weld would be, but left metal the could be bent out to make the comb on the top of the helm.. this helm was my first project that i did the welding on...

I don't have a pattern for the helm, just sort of made it from looking at pictures. prolly took about ten nights of working on it.. about 4-6 hours a night. it seemed to go by pretty fast.

yep, going to do an SCA rapier legal faceplate for it and I was thinking of doing a falling buffe, but I think that for now I'll just do a normal one.. something like the one on the helm in the helmet section
of this site.

I'll prolly be doing one of these sometime in the next few months for Popinjay's so I should be able to get some photos of one as it goes through different stages of construction.. but I might try doing things a little different..
