The Armour Archive

Hello All,

I have being reading on this forum with lots of pleasure and learend ALOT. I decided to get off the ´guest´ list, and become a member but I made a deal with my self that before becoming a member I needed to have something to contribute.

So while I was planning to start (and actually really did start) with my first helm, I let my imagination go to work and I came up with some sketches.
Well the only remark I could make for my self....why did I sketch something so darn hard to make!!!

Having read up a few things seen some movies I thought lets just give it a go.


The helm is being made from 2 mm steel. I had to make it out of several pieces....not yet that expierenced as most of you here and missing alot of tools...

As soon as I have more pictures I will of course update.

That's gonna be neat!

Hi there, Welcome to the AA, Neat looking helm and great first project for sure. I like the flutes on the top of the helm. Have you been watching the Chronicles of Riddick? That helm looks alot like the Necromonger helms, cept yours is better because its made of good steel. Keep the pics coming we love those here.

Hehe I was not aware that the first helm should be crap , anyways I have read time and time again ALWAYS keep your `first` parts of armor, so first helmet , first gauntlets etc...

The archive helped and is still helping me so much, I can only have the greatest respect for anybody who is doing this.

Looks interesting. You may want to try and work on a bit more definition out of fluting on some scrap. I can't tell if you did or not in the pictures, but you might want to make sure the edges on the front gap are fairly blunt, unless you want to accidentally cut your face (It was shaving, I swear!). Overall, great start.

I have taken that into account, they are blunt and I have made it that all the (as of yet, might change) points (top nose in particular) are pointing outwards so I can not harm my self.

I wish I could work everyday on this but due to not having the workshop close at home, I only have the free time to do this in the weekends....I know...

You could say that a barbute depicts the basic form of the helmet, but than again I have taking some nice things I saw in some of the maximilian helmets from the Churburg collection (mainly for the top part) it is really a mixture of coolstuf I saw and my imagination.

I think you need more hammers.
I think we all need more stakes.

There are some really noticable hammer marks in the piece. It appears that you are trying to grind them out.

Genneraly speaking, I find it much easier to not put the hammer marks in in the first place.

This is where having more hammers comes in. Buy craploads of inexpensive ball peens, and customize them as neccisary. If you don't have a hammer that fits between the flutes and stuff so that you can clean them up nice, make one.

I'm really not that good, and put a lot of hammer marks in anyway. I find it much easier and faster and less detrimental to the thickness of my material to hammer them out, rather than grind them out.

You'll need to start collecting stakes and hammers for this too. At this point, any surface that touches your work should be pretty shiney. You don't want to go putting more marks in.

Your right I see it that there are some points which match, but then again alot of points which do not match. Nice find

Did I start to early with grinding...when is it the right time to start?? when are you really finished with hitting the steel. I dunno, al I did know was that hammering more was not really giving any effect.

Am I missing tools...hammers, staves, anvil etc...YES I am. That is something I am working on and should maby work even harder on...but that brings me to a point...the time I am working on getting more tools I can´t work on my beloved armour....

I have projects that never got started, or have been started and put off for years because I got so far along, and then "Hmmm.... I need to make a stake/swage/hammer/thing. Screw it. I'll make different armor."

I edited your picture just a teeny bit.



I could be wrong. I'm just going off of what I see in the pictures.

This looks like a deep hammer mark to me. Far deeper than I would personally care to try to sand out.

Instead, I would lay that portion of the helmet over a stake, or a piece of pipe shined up (which would really at that point become a 'stake'), or maybe my anvil horn. I would then get a tiny little hammer and hammer on the inside to push that divot back out to where it matched the surface of the helmet the way it was 'supposed' to.

When doing this, tiny, light, accurate taps with the hammer, not great big smashing blows.

Well it has being a week and I have done some major checking to see if I could find dents or hammer marks.
So I could fix using the method mattmaus suggested....and it found some..mattmaus thank you for pointing that out.

After fixing the dents/hammermarks I continued with grinding, this is very time consuming since im doing this with a very small grinder (which is very handy for al the small curves etc.).
