The Armour Archive

This is a helmet that I built for Camric. Its based on the Chernigov 10th century find. Sometimes referred to as the "Great Polish Helm"
Its stainless with a brushed finish and a Knutt stainless aventail.

he kind of challenged me on this one about a year ago and we set up a deadline for this fall.
Its started with some pretty inspirational pictures that he sent me and went from there.

I just sent him the pictures ( I just finished it a hour ago) so he probably hasn't seen it , but I thought it came out cool so they are up here.

Im enjoying making this Rus' stuff and I hope to finish my own kit before Estrella. Well at least have it in the correct direction.

Donngal is off for a weekend excursion with his wife, so I'll try to answer a couple of the questions in case he doesn't see them.

The brass plaques are thick enough that the dimples should stay without being back filled, and the dimples are pretty stubborn.

The mail is actually sewn to the brow band before it was rivetted to the helmet. We wouldn't normally do something like that because it can be a gigantic maintenance headache, but Greenshield is someone that'll take the time to keep up with it, so it should only be a small headache,

I'll tell you, the pictures really don't do this thing justice, it is way nicer in person...

Nothing like looking at a spiff kit when the King is whacking on you. Just when you think his Majesty has a kit to emulate..BOOM..here comes a curve ball. Great work.

I'm here I haven't left yet.

The small plaques on the side are made from 2 pieces of brass the middle is just thick, 12 gauge. There are 4 rivets there that I blended into the brass. Like Johannes mentioned the dimples will hold up to quite a beating and dont require any filling in the back.

The part of the back plate that's exposed was really me just not having any clue how I was gonna attach the mail, what it was gonna do or need to have done. Greenshield didn't want any exposed leather so I had this crazy Idea of sewing it to the brass brow band then attaching that to the helm after the grill was done. This required to helm to have been put together in order to make the grill fit correctly. lets just say this at first made my brain hurt.
This method isn't something I'll will be doing a lot of, maybe on my own helm.

Hi there, wow, that is a really nice looking helm. If I had the skills to make a helm like this, which I dont, The only thing Id have done different would be to leave out the raised bump at the points on the upper panels, and let the brass rivets take their place. Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.

If you dont mind me asking.. how did you manage to make such neat dimples? A punch block of some sort? All I've tried tend to be a bit irregular.

Small rivets? not sure which ones you mean.

there are small rivets on the brass decor, but the helm is riveted with larger 3/16th rivets.

Around the edge where the steel plates join. Must be more dimpling like what you did on the brass.
