What size of helmet will fit the most people?

Post by Armourkris »

lately work seems to be a lot more sitting at home not working than working and getting paid, add to that the fact that I'll be going back to school in march and it all adds up to me needing a little extra cash.

I figured making a few helmets to sell might be a good way to help with that. It does leave me with one question though.

What size of helmet is the most likely to fit the most people?

23-25 seems to be the quickest to sell here on the AA.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

I've got a fat head at 24, but most people I've seen on here are in the 23.5-24.5 range.

24' (inside) gives most people enough room for padding. Smaller than that and it may not.

Someone with a small head can add more padding.

All but 2 of the helms I ever made were 24 aside from one for a tiny head and one for a very large melon. Everybody else fit in the 24s.

Just to clarify, in case it's not obvious, the measurements being given are HEAD size, not the helmet itself.

The inside of your helmet should be in the 28"-30" range in most cases at the brow line.

The simplest advice anyone has ever given on custom sizing for SCA gear came from Johanes at Windrose.

Take the head measurement at the brow, and add 5 inches.

You can screw around with all kinds of fancy math, and none of it will work any better than that method.

Obviously that won't work as well if you're trying to make a close fitting piece or something more 'living history' grade.

One of the things that I prefered to know, was the measurement of the axises of the bowl. When making custom helmets if I got those right, the circumference didn't matter a bit, I could be off either way by an inch, and my customers would tell me "It fits just right!"

The front to back axis of the helmet should run 9 1/2" - 10" on an average sized piece.

The side to side axis should be 7-1/2" - 8".

It never ceased to amaze me that those were really the only measurements you need, unless sizing for someone with really strange proportions. In order for everything else to look right, the rest of the helmet will generaly size up or down to match the bowl. If it looks right, it will probably fit right.
It looked better in my head....
Damnit.
