Ruthardis is busy building helms and asked me to get this posted for him.
Inspiration is a woven top Sutton Hoo helm. I'm going to let Ruthardis speak to his work in more detail.

Spiff! How was the steel patterned? Worked from the inside over a rough anvil or un-planished with a rough faced hammer? I'm noticing a repeated pattern in some pieces and I think I can tell what the tool looked like that made them.

...who just got the idea of dishing into a loose pile of chain for a more rustic effect. Gotta try it one day.

I have tried a few hammers that I have textured the heads using dremel ttols, angle grinders, drills, and some welding spatter. this seems to be the best for depth and random effect. its just a 2 lb peen that I have partial and criss cross cuts ro rough up the metal for an "older" or "hammered" look. works well with the blackening and the final buff off.
