Help: Greaves that stay put.

Post by Aegis »

Ive tried making simple greaves for myself with leather, but when I run and move around, they shift on my legs and end up falling.

I have formed them around my leg similar to bracers, and have 3 buckles holding them together, but no matter how tight I make it they simply shift off.

any suggestions?

How molded/shaped are your greaves? Mine conform pretty closely to the contour of my shin so they don't slide around much. Your shin is not shaped in a simple "U", so even a simple frontal greave needs some shape to it. For holding them up, put a strap right above your calf, almost near the back of the knee. This will allow your calf muscle to hold up the greave. A second strap a few inches above the ankle should secure the lower portion.

If your upper strap is below the widest part of your calf, it will be difficult to use the straps to hold the greaves up, no matter how tight you buckle them. Past the wide point of the calf, you are strapping to a tapered cylinder, gravity combined with the pressure from the straps will keep pushing the greaves down, until they bottom out on the top of your foot. Which is likely not a comfortable place for them to be.

hi there
add a point about ankle height on both sides of your foot.
rivet leather laces onto your boot.
tie off laces.
should keep the grieve in place.
works great.
