remember that scythian suit?

Post by Vladimir »

The lamellar one that was so impressive. It had a big lamellar shell over the shoulders and upper back and even had lamellar knee cops and crotch protection. (wish I could post the pic)

I was looking at a copy of "Smithsonian" today and there it was. I noticed something I hadn't seen before, the whole suit is upward facing lamellar except the upper right breast. It looks more like scale, curved bottoms facing down.

It is a reproduction of something they dug out of the ground. I have a hard time believing that they, or the scythian's simply ran out of lamellar and finished it off with scales.

So, why? Does it add mobility to the working arm? That would be my guess.

Sorry, I just took down my webpage on that suit this afternoon. If you want, Vlad, I can email you the images from the webpage.

It's all scale (at least the one in the "Scythian Gold" book).

Far as I know, Scythians did not use lamellar.

As for why one would use both (or a variety of different scale and lamellar plates) -- fashion.

With all the jewelry those guys wore -- Scythians just liked to look spiff (as did the ancient Celts, the Vikings...).
