tool photo question... same thing?

Post by Baron Conal »

Is it just me or are these the same thing?

I can't link to the photo from Sears so I'm gonna give page addresses

Doweling jig from Sears

Doweling jig from Harbor Freight

The photo is just reversed and stretched on the Sears page....right?

Yup. Same thing, same factory.. same crappy cosmoline all over it when you take it out of the waxed paper.

Only difference is the carton for the Sears one probably isn't mildewed and stinky, as opposed to the HF one. :)

I take it you have one?

How well does it work?

heh.... stumbled across this about Cosmoline

The most important task relative to Cosmoline cleaning is to memorize and then continue to repeat to yourself, "Cosmoline is my friend", remembering that this substance is why your new rifle is not a pile of rust and rotted wood.

No, I just looked at them at both places.

I don't dowel very much.. I have a real nice biscuit joiner I typically use, and/or I just use a story stick and my drill press if I'm going to do doweling.

A friend of mine, however, has a doweling jig much like that.. and LOVES it.

The project I'm gonna use it on will require holes into the
end grain on one side....

and the use of my biscuit joiner....

Some of the joints I want something a little stronger than
a biscuit to hold it together and I can't afford for Kreg
pocket screw kit I want right now.... :?

( I like the Kreg pocket screw system. It works really well
AND its fast as all get out... )

You can (maybe?) make do with a couple lines, a square, and a drill press.

Except my drill press is a bench model and the cross pieces won't fit for end grain work.....

I thought about trying to turn the drill press around and have it
hang off the end of the bench.....

but for a $20 doweling jig.... its just not worth the effort.

Mines the in-between bench and floor model.. I can rotate the table and get lined up with the spindle, as well as spinning the head 360 on the shaft.

Next step is a radial arm drill press. MUHAHAH
