The cellata you have pictured is in the Metropolitn Museum of Art in N.Y.C. There is a picture of this helmet on page 13 of Arms and Armor by Steven V. Gransky. It is a small book with very small pictures and out of print. I have allways liked this helmet too, but I have been told the visor is suspicous.

It's a shame too, because it makes a great fighting hat w/ no need for a bevor.

It shares some features, particularly the visor, with the D 14 sallet of Phillip I in the Real Armeria.

There also is the now lost Trevanion sallet.

That last, the Trevanion Salet, looks, to my eye, very pretty.
Has anyone tried to recreate it, or one like it?

Once I get my current helm done, I might just be convinced to give something similar a try..

A friend of mine owns a copy of a similar sallet, referred to as the "bosworth" sallet. He lent it to one of his chums for a tournament we put on.:

I have heard the Trevanion sallet referred to as the Bosworth sallet.
I think the Trevanion family claim that an ancestor wore in in the battle of Bosworth.

Enrico, that's a very pretty hat, indeed. Thank you, sir, for that example, because now it means I won't be totally out in left field when I give mine a go.

I can see perhaps but one difference that I may have, that being a slightly 'shallower' chin. The lower part of the visor looks to be a tad long, but that's only my possible lack of taste showing. And just because I love the torture of articulation, I may try for a lobster-tail...

Very pretty indeed, and now a source of inspiration. Again, thank you =D

You know, looking at these...

Anyone remember the goblin mounted knights from the movie Labyrinth?

I was always fascinated by their helmets, and assumed they were complete fabrications for the movie.

But these celatas remind me of those quite a bit.

While they have typical fantasy crap like the enormous spike on top of the skull- I wonder if there was an original helm they copied for the basic shape?

I was interested in making this sallet many years ago and contacted the Met about. I don't remember the assistant I spoke to the time, but he pulled the file on the helmet and read me some of the notes on it which included, helmet bowl cut and reshaped to it's current form, fabricated tail lames (not medieval), visor not original to the helmet etc. That is why it is not on display and probably never will be again.

It's cute enough to catch my eye, but a total 19th-20th century kludge job of no historical merit. There is a similar sallet in Madrid however (similar visor, different tail solution).

Best Wishes, Tom

Enrico,

It was almost surprising seeing my own Flickr page pop up. It's been so long, I didn't remember that you had the link. Weird

Iain,

We modified the original to make some accommodations, mostly for SCA. Your results may vary and you might find different solutions. WHEN you do, you just have to post pictures and share with the rest of us voyeurs.

Ironbadger,

YES! That's exactly what I was thinking of when I took this shot:

I SO loved the creative design of that movie

The example in Madrid had a bevor matched to it. I think if you built it to the proportions of the original it would leave too much of the jaw and throat exposed for most folks to be comfortable with for SCA use.

I hope you didn't mind.
I got it from an archive post you made a few years ago.

No problem in the least.....it was more of a funny observation than anything else.

Kinda like seeing an old picture of yourself in a photo album that's sitting on your friends coffee table....except this time we're admiring armour rather than laughing at my old hair style choices.

All good
