Music Stand

I recently just got my cello working again and I'm making a stand for it. I'm planning on making it rather ornate and three layered. The center layer is going to be brass, the designs are going to be steel. The steel will more or less make the framing and backbone of the piece, and all three sheets will be riveted using a combonation of brass and copper hand made rivets. I have to questions reguarding this. What thicknesses should the sheets be? And how should I form the pole portion and connection piece? I don't want it to be overly heavy, but I also don't mind a bit of weight and I also don't want it to be floppy either... I was thinking 20g or there about... 22g is too thin to clean up the edges very well... any insights will be greatly appreciated
