First chapel-de-fer

Post by beastlybabe08 »

Hi everyone,

Obviously, I'm new here, but here's a pic of my first attempt at armoring. I made a chapel-de-fer using the guidelines in a book I have. It's really rough and I didn't do any finishing work or polishing because I was more interested in learning the hammering and assembly techniques. It's also a little oddly-sized. I used 16g mild, but was wondering what gauges other people possibly use for a chapel-de-fer.

I've never made one, but I own 3 chapels de fers and they are all around 2mm 13/14ga. mild steel bowl and brim. But they are for SCA combat.

LOOKS GREAT! Next one, i would use a few less rivets, space them out a bit. But damn that is nice!

thanks! yes, the heavier gauge makes sense for use, but it is already pretty heavy, especially since it sits on top of the head and the neck takes all the weight.

oh and can someone tell me how to post a picture directly in a post? i'm not very good with these things haha

to put a picture in a post you need to first host it somewhere, I use photobucket.com, under each picture you put there are several lines of code ( after you move your mouse over the pic )
copy the line that begins with 'IMG' and paste it in here with your text.
or if hosting in your own webspace use the img button above here then the url of the picture then click on the img button again like...

forges, stake plates, tools and lots more

Wow, do you have any previous experience in metalworking? Because it looks really really good for a first piece. My first piece was a total failure.

Thanks Dwarf, I'll give that a shot next time.

Thanks Paperjack! I have experience in making steel sculpture, so mostly cutting and welding, not detailed hammerwork, which is really tough!

Welcome to the forum beastlybabe08.

I like your first helm, it came out very nice.
I use 20ga. steel if I am going to wear it.
18ga. if I have to weld it.
Also, whatever thickness the client request.

Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work.

20 g? I didn't realize that thin could be worn safely. I've had trouble mig welding 18 g in the past, what kind of welding do you do?
