Here is my latest project in 14g stainless.
I made it as a gift this for a friend,but was wondering if I was to make something similar what a fair market price would be.
Will you guys give me a ballpark of what you think would be a reasonable price for something like this.

Fantasy? I'm not so sure, but I do think that's a pretty party hat

It is a nice hat and I would not attempt it for less than 1200 however;
many on the forum would do it for 700.00 and some would do a hack job for 375.00.
Perhaps... some would even offer 100.00 for a rough knock off.

Don't ask me I do not make stainless steel helms.

Howdy Stahlgrim, real nice looking hat. I was going to estimate it at 7-800 dollars for that helm but I like Hals estimate better. Im the king of charging 100 dollars for some thing and working on it for 3 days... Keep up the good work.

I would expect someone to charge 800-1000+ for something like that in stainless.

I had figured at around $250 to $350 so I am a little shocked at the prices you guys are suggesting.
It wasn't that hard a project thanks to all the information I have gathered here on the archive over the years.
I made this for a friend, Countess Slaine ,she fights at our local practice and she has a mild steel helm that I am tired of pounding dents out of.
The raven nasal/brow was a spur of the moment idea that I etched with ferric chloride.Her heraldic device is a raven.
you will probably see it on the field at Gulf War.

Do you want to know what it is worth? Or what people will pay for it?

The only way to find out what people will ay for it is to put one up for sale.

Personally I would figure what you had figured for a sale price.

I would pay $300-350 for it.

I wouldn't pay $1200 for it. But that is my preference... somone else may.


On another note... I have a project in mind that calls for some etched stainless... I would love to talk!

MJ I agree with you on the whole what the market will bear thing. and the etching was very simple to do I used the radio shack pc board etching solution. the process was so simple even I couldn't screw it up.
1. Cut out the piece
2.File edges
3.Polished to desired level of shiny.
4.Washed in dish detergent to remove buffing compound.
5. Clean again with denatured alcohol.

6. Painted on resist I used some Testor enamel I had kicking around.
This took the longest time.(Normally I would con my wife the professional artist to do this but she was at a tattoo convention in Detroit so I bite the bullet.)
I also covered the parts my hand might touch with a paper towel to keep the skin oils off the piece and went over it lightly on the bare places with an alcohol soaked qtip.

7. Dropped it into a tote with enough PC board etch to cover the piece.
8. Waited about 3-4 hours
9. Removed piece (with gloves on)
10. Rinsed piece
11. Removed paint with paint stripper
12. Rinsed piece
13.Washed in dish detergent
14.Polished to desired level of shiny
15.Washed in dish detergent to remove buffing compound.
16. Shaped done with rawhide and rubber mallets and a piece of leather to protect surface.
17.Mounted to helm with bolts.(I covered whole thing in blue painters tape to protect it from random mishaps.)
18. riveted the thing on removed the tape and gave it one last polish and wash.
19.sigh of relief that nothing catastrophic happened.
The thing I found most difficult was painting the design on for the etching as I said I am not the artistic one of the family.I had not planned to do anything like it but it kinda came to me as I was nearly finished with the base helm.so I went for it.

I would say about the 500 to 700 range. It's very nice and has some added artistry to it which has its own value. It is also stainless which is a good selling point for folks who don't like labor intensive armor upkeep.
