Heath that helm doesn't look like SCA legal to me. I need something to fight in for tournaments and war.

i guarantee it is sca legal, it was made by jackie at shamrock armory.
my friend just decided once he got the helm that he wanted to work with the one he already had.
the leather on the cheek plates cover the metal.
they are also hinged with a pin in the front for easy entry.
if you look closely at the top down picture you can see the plates hinged open.
and if you look closely at the other two you can see the metal cheek plates.
i guess its good that it looks to real to be legal eh?

ill add that with the hinged cheek design it removes the need for a chin strap.
you just put it on pop in the pin and go.

Uhh, what?
All helms shall be equipped with a chinstrap or equivalent means to prevent the helm from being dislodged or metal contacting the wearer’s face during combat. An equivalent might be, for example, a bevor or a chin-cup suspension system. A “snug fit” is NOT an equivalent. The chinstrap shall be at a minimum a ½ inch (12.7mm) in width and shall not be placed in the helm in a manner that could strangle the wearer.
How do having hinged cheek-plates remove the need for a chinstrap?

because when you pad the cheeks right you get locked into the helmet and it provides a more solid padding system then a chin strap, safest type of helmet i have ever fought in.

nope not at all, i firmly believe there are no stupid questions and if you dont know something its only because nobody has ever told you.
ill see if i can find some pics of this type that show better how it works.

ok here are a few from west coast armory that show how it works pretty well.
the plates curve with the plane of the face down to the chin where it pretty much makes it impossible to remove the helmet without either removing the pin or removing your head.

That's what I do for my helm...it is a "different" feeling and I say that cuz Im used to chin straps from wearing the kevlar helmet when I was military. The helm was also made by Shamrock.... here is a pic of mine. I plan to cover the plates with leather but havent figured on way that I like to attach the pieces ive made. Its not a mongol helm though in case anyone was wondering....just wanted to show another chinstrapless helm.

Okay, the next set of pics of the helm did look SCA legal. It was the other pics showed a lot of leather especially in the back. I just love my noggin more protected when I fight. When I saw the first set of pics it looked like that the sides were all made of leather and the top was only metal.

so for anyone interested this helm is mild steel, 28 1/2 or 28 3/4 outer band at the brow.
russeted w/ brass acents and a red horsehair.
paid 850 or so and is willing to take a loss.
ill pop this over to the calssified board if nobody here is interested.
