Saddle maker?

Post by Graham Ashford »

Hello folks,

I have been approached by a customer of mine who would like to have a Roman saddle made for them to be able to ride their horse. I don't know the first thing about Roman saddle making and wondered whether anyone here would be interested in quoting her for the work?

If you make saddles and think your able to help her, let me know and I will drop her an email with your contact details, or if you have any suggestions of anyone able to take this on can you let me know and I will get their details as well?

I'm not looking for any mark up or involvement, I'll simply pass across your details and let you start talking with her.

Many thanks for any help you can offer.

My specialty is central European medieval saddles, but I pay attention to those who make historical replica/reconstruction saddles worldwide.

I suggest you check with the numerous Roman reenactment groups there in the UK (like Ermine St guard, etc) and in Germany. There are many and they are generally really good and very knowledgeable. They can point you in the direction of the one or two people, primarily in the UK who can make a solid reconstruction. The only people I've heard of who make Roman saddles are there in the UK.

You can put the word out on the Living History UK forum also.

Roman saddles are interesting beasts, and several reconstructions have been made and experimented with. You shouldn't have any trouble finding someone there to do one, but it likely won't be cheap.
