Most of the relevant-sounding net hits yield a lumber yard or something in Sandy, UT. Perhaps more details? What is it supposed to be?

I think he means Sandeply plywood. It is a finish quality pine plywood with a water resistant glue. The home boat builders use it if they want to go cheap. I can't think of any reason for it not to be a good base for a shield. I could be just a little heavier than CDX ply because it does not have as many voids. I can't imagine that being an issue on a piece the size of a shield. Maybe an once or less? Both Lowes and Home Depot carry it.

Start with a better quality plywood, and you'll probably get better results than using CDX.

Nothing too exciting. "Better quality" plywood would be a pretty accurate description. I'd use it to make things that should look good with a coat of paint. Another good plywood that I would look at is HDO plywood (Duraply). It is basically a better ply that has phenolic impregnated paper on the outsides and is darned near water poof. It is often used for concrete forms and I hear sign painters like the stuff as well. I made some throwing bats out of it for pottery about 10 yrs ago and all but one or two are still as flat and solid as the day I made them. Got some minor abrasions from where I grind grog against it with my hands. Tough stuff, I don't coddle them. Next time I make a painted shield I'm using it. Check with your local smaller specialty building suppliers. I don't know if Hugh's carries it, you may need to ask around.
