VERY nice!!! Love the faceplate! I have long planned to make myself one of these for the hellenistic kit I have been planning - I hope mine will look half as sexy as yours! :D

Any reason for minimizing the peak so much? Is that necessary to comply with SCA rules?

It is not particularly necessary to comply with SCA rules, but think about the lever arm on your neck that crest on the original creates. I have to wonder whether that helm was ever meant to be worn in combat because of that crest.

I think it was, greek combat had way more emphasis on thrusting than on slashing so the risk of a broken neck is reduced. still it is a little extreme. thanks guys.

you ruined it, I had noticed this and was planning on photo shopping the helm when finished on to Poppa Smurf and coloring it to match.

Without question - many kinds of ancient helms had tall crests or were very tall and pointy themselves. Assyrian helmets, for example, usually had a point that was as high again as the bowl of the helmet. The principle melee weapon of the ancient world was the spear, so blows to the side of the head were not going to be as common (and it seems many ancient helms were unstrapped, so a solid blow to the side of a crest would just knock the helm off the person's head). However, I think ancient helms were designed above all to defend against missile weapons. The shoulder doublings of Greek and Roma armour were certainly designed to help protect against missiles coming in at steep angles, and I suspect pointy helmets like the Assyrian ones were considered better for deflecting incoming missiles (whether or not this is really true, I do not know).

On that note anyone interested in buying my current helm?
I have a 24 inch head and the helm fits well with a cloth and wool liner. with blue foam it would probably fit up to a 25 1/2 inch head. the top is twelve gauge, the face is fourteen and the back is sixteen. No dents and due to the Russet-ed finish no rust.
Three hundred plus shipping.

I read it as a hip combination of "fabulous" & "fantastic", which this helmet certainly is.

Hi, beautiful hat Knitebee. One thing that occurred to me was that a thrust may crush the moustache over the mouth area in combat. Maybe you could run a 1/4 inch bar on the inside to reinforce it? I cant wait to see this one finished. Thanks for the progress pics.

Take care

Pitbull
