New Ottoman Helm

Construction by Drachen Birch. Its 12 gauge stainless throughout. At the top is a lathed down bolt that can be removed and replaced with plume holder or sharp spike (the nut is welded into the peak). The Tulip and rosette bolt are handmade. The brass sliding nasal is for show and will be replaced by a stainless version.
He's still working on the faceplate. He's just not sure if its going to be a laser cut bargrill or more of a full reproduction human face.
Just wanted to show it. Maybe get a little feedback for him.

Good GOD.

To be honest, I've seen better helmtops and lobster tails. But that whole front arrangement blows me away. Fantastic work.

As the resident Osmanliphile, I must say that I approve.

That is quite attractive but goodness it must weigh a ton! 12g stainless w/ overlapping plates!
Nice piece though and yes that front assembly is a thing of beauty!
Tell him to do both types of faceplates and then show us more pics!

All the originals weigh a ton, too. I'd be a bit leery of a bronze soul-iron ("lelekvas," don't even know what the Ottoman term is)... it'll have to be thick to handle the abuse. Or is this solely for SCA use, and it'll be swapped out with a grill or something?

Spectacular! Can't wait to see what bit looks like all together with faceplate and all.
I'm aching with lust and jealousy.

Russ - Just out of curiosity do you know what the weights were?
I've fought in it twice with a temp faceplate and it is pretty heavy.
It fits perfectly (made to a buck. He's also a panel beater).

Somehow, Logan, I find that look -- no discernible face -- discomfiting and a bit intimidating.
Cool.

If it's anything like the original I handled, it's gotta be something on the order of ten pounds at minimum -- I've handled lighter SCA great helms. They may look nice and light with the open face, but they're just monster helms. I couldn't *believe* how heavy it was the first time I picked it up.

The armorer who was making the helm has lost his workspace. We both agreed that the 12 gauge tail needed to be replaced, but he can't do it now.
I might be shopping around at Pennsic for someone who can put a new tail on it.
I'm going to try to finish my kit up for Warriors of history though.
