Need help with designing and building a round shield

Post by johnapsega »

Hey everyone this is my first post here and so far I am liking everything that I am seeing on this forum.

I am looking to make a Round shield suitable for a soldier in the mid 13th century. I am going to get this boss to put on the shield http://kultofathena.com/product.asp?ite ... hield+Boss. I have no idea how to do this other than to use plywood, this especially goes for painting (although I have an idea), facing and putting a rim on the shield. The only thing that I know that I need is a strap to put it on my back because the kit it goes with will be carried around fairs and hopefully be used for SCA events when I join. However that will not be for a while so I am solely interested in historical accuracy for now.

Just in case this is necessary this is the pic that gave me the idea it would be good for a kit in this time period. http://s1041.photobucket.com/albums/b41 ... kleaf9.gif

Thank you
John

First off, welcome and well come, John! :)

There are several good shield construction threads here on the Archive:

There are more, but those should get you started.

Consciously historical rounds of the Maciejowski Bible style (c. 1250 AD) of SCA construction differ a bit from purely Living History circa-1250 rounds, in that they usually have resilient edges incorporated to save both rattan and shield-edge. If you build a LH-standards shield first and then plan to take it to SCA fighting, expect to modify the shield edge, likely making the whole thing heavier. And really, it would hardly be any more effort to build two shields. Just more wood. Sure, you're being ingenious, but frankly the gain would not be great. Welcome and well come to the Archive. Seems to be a big night for new guys.
