Knightly necklace
Are there any rules associated with making a knight's necklace or is it more or less anything that I want? I've been watching the Tudors lately and many things about it have piqued my intrest, stylisticly. How historically acurate are the clothes and armour? Also is there any evidance of a necklace being worn above a gorget, or being made into a part of the gorget as well as a part of the breast plate? just an idle inkling in my mind for a future project...
Re: Knightly necklace
I don't know to much about the clothes, but the cheesy party-city armour was terrible.
Re: Knightly necklace
Try a search for livery collar or collar. A very basic search finds many images of them, but none worn with armor. They are certainly popular in the Tudor Period, but I doubt they were worn with armor much or at all.

Usualy fealty chains are unadorned and with out a clasp and gold in color.
Traditions verys from kingdom to kingdom and even Knightly linage.
The most common chainmail weaves are Half persian, Box, and Byzintine.

I thought that historically, they were usually made of brass and originally used to suspend light fixtures.

Hahahaha....from a time when most SCA members were students and money was very "tight". (food, classes, books, beer/wine parties, et.c....not necessarily in that order)
But then, it was what the concept these "light fixture chains" represented.....as part of the original dream.

Re: Knightly necklace
There are surviving examples of princely armors with decorations of order collars. This page has a number of armors. The collars can be engraved or embossed. Collars were also worn over armor.
There were historical restrictions about wearing collars but they varied depending on time/place. Mediaeval European Jewellery by RW Lightbown has several chapters devoted to collars. In an SCA context there may be social or written rules regulating their use but you'd have to ask your local herald.
Please don't use The Tudors as source material. I suggest starting with The Tudor Tailor.

i think the only thing accurate in that show was the boobies - the natural part not the frequency.

Re: Knightly necklace
I wasn't going to use it as a reference, just as a starting point, and I almost want to start making that style over the hoge-poge stuff I've been doing...
