Woke up this morning with a 99.5 and I'm pretty sure everything between my stomach and my toenails came up.
Is there anyone who can give LastKnight a ride? I'm not up to a 2 hour drive and I'm pretty sure nobody wants whatever bug I've got.
Edit... I'm watching to see if anyone can go get LastKnight. If not, I'm comming anyway. There's no way a young person that interested in Armouring should miss this gathering.

It's very unfortunate that you got sick all of a sudden. I respect you for still being willing to give me a ride even with your sickness, but please just stay home and rest if you feel too unwell. As much as I would like to go to this event, I don't want to force a sick man to drive 2 hours just to give me a ride.
Feel better soon.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone else going to this event and is passing by Pasadena is willing to give me a ride.

I can swing by and get you.
We'll get to Chris's shop a little late but since we have a whole weekend it's no big deal.

I hope you can get rid of that nasty bug by day's end and still join us tomorrow.

So, who is going to provide a quick synopsis of what happened so those of us who didn't attend will regret it sufficiently?
What was the best thing you saw or learned?
I assume Mac was a font of knowledge and worth every minute?
I don't have personal experience, but I expect Chris was full of useful information too. Right?

Demonstrations done by Mac: how to properly form a lame, setting a crease, raising, triangle rolls, small rolls, and how to properly flair the wing on Italian elbow cops.
Also touched on some articulation theory, both in critiqing projects people brought, as well as the Maximillian gauntlets he had made for Chris.
Covered how much range of motion you really need (or dont need) in certain joints and areas.
Talked about theories on how greaves should be designed, i.e. placement, where it should be form fitted, where there should be some space.
Chris was a great source of information as well. He covered a lot on plastics use, vacumforming, as well as spin casting pewter.
Im sorry, I know I am currently leaving out a lot, but it is early and my head is still realing for all the information it has absorbed this weekend. I'll add more as I remember, but others feel free to correct me or add on.

yeah honestly, for someone like me the information was like a constant river.
not just from mac and chris but the entire group as well.
the discussions on theory vs practicality, hypothetical vs reality or practicality alone were worth the price of admission.
i cannot say enough about the value of a venture like this one.
everyone who missed it for whatever reason should do whatever it takes to make the next one.
if there is another.
i would suggest making it an annual event.
everyone attending can throw down 50 bucks or so for costs.
gives everybody time to plan.
well worth the time.
just listening to mac ramble was great.

We also discussed how to heat treat 1050 and things to watch out for on warpage, as well as tempering. Chris demonstrated what happens to 1050 if you quench it without tempering and it shatters like glass. Then he tempered a peice and it was like a spring. Mac also suggested that if you have a number of small pieces that are quenched and not yet tempered that they can crack over time and to at least temper them at 200 in an oven to reduce this effect until you have time or a cool enough kiln to properly tempor the pieces.
Mac also showed the diferences between some of the different types of hammers and how much metal they move when raising. Raising vs. ball peen (not the ball end), and heavier vs lighter hammer.
We discussed and demonstraited that there are times that it is better to shape without a stake or tool behind the work (sharpening a crease, creating the button on the point of a bassinet pointed face plate, rolls, etc) Working with the piece against your leg or chest and using faster lighter hammer blows vs. heavy slower blows.
All in all it was a great time and learning experiance.
Thank you to both Chris and Mac for doing this and sharing what you know.

I only got to go Saturday but still learned alot. 8 hours went by in a flash. Having that venue with any tool you want and quality examples from a variety of centuries and cultures was great. Someone would say something like how does that compare between 15th and 16th century armours and you could pull examples of both and have Mac go over the details with tips on how to construct them. I got a pretty good video of Mac's discussion on greave fitting and function. The video of the hot working was so so.
Thanks so much Chris and Mac for making this happen!

Yeah

I would have tried taking videos of Mac whilst armoring, but I haven't had any practice with using that camera function yet.
Thanks LastKNIGHT! It was great to finally meet you in person too.

Thanks to all that could attend, it was great to meet everyone and see the things you’re working on.
Thank you to Mac for sharing some of your vast knowledge so freely.
We have talked about doing this again and if it does work out, I will certainly post an announcement on the board. Hopefully with more than a 30 day lead time.

Yes, please.
I bet I could guess how it will go, but it is always nice to see how others do things. And it is fun to listen to Mac.
I expect people say the same about me.
You should see the "how could x be done" with Wade, Tom and Mac in the same room. We are all different.

It's going to take me a couple days to compress the videos and get it uploaded.
EDIT:
Sorry guys. I don't think I can get the videos up. There's about 2 gigs worth of videos that I've been trying to compress and render but the quality keeps coming out horrible and the size is still too big.

Someone help him find a solution to this.
I would gladly download 2 gig of video.
Who can host it for him?

It's not really a matter of whether or not someone can host for me. It's going to take ages to upload 2 gigs to youtube. Around 15 hours of my bandwidth being completely used up to get that much uploaded. My internet upload speed isn't all that fast.
Maybe one of the other people that took videos might have better luck than me with this.

I don't have a good way to get it there, but I could host it on my site if we can get it to me.
If you can get it to somewhere I can FTP/SFTP/SCP I can put it up on allenantiques. That would get me a copy.
Feel free to email me to figure something out. I probably can't leave them there forever, but months would be fine.

i thonk the critiques were very informative and well presented.
without being too harsh. sometimes an honest opinion from someone who actually knows what they are talking about goes along way.

I would like to make sure it is ok with you to post the videos of the demos you did. I am still trying to put some of them together and hope to get them up on youtube as long as you dont mind them being up there for the public.

William,
Feel free to put the vids. up, but please be sure to disable the comments. Youtube viewers can be a rude and heartless lot, and I could not bear to read what folks might say.
