Springfield Leather has 6-packs of horse butt strips for $4.99. I got some in today, and used them, and it's excellent leather. Horse leather has a tighter grain than cow leather, so it's denser and doesn't stretch nearly as much as cow leather of the same thickness. These strips are about 6-8oz thickness, and 1.5" wide by about 36" long. They're so cheap because they're not quite long enough to really get a belt from, except for little people and kids. You can dye, stamp and tool them too, if you want to.

Five bucks for six 1.5"x36" straps. Can't beat that! I ordered five more packs today.

I got some of those a couple weeks ago.
Most of mine were long enough to make belts from. And the leather quality is great, despite the price.

Springfield Leather is an excellent resource. Thanks for bringing this particular deal to our collective attention. Horse butt is some of the nicest leather I've worked with, on multiple levels. Tools well, edges finish beautifully, looks great and wears better than cow.

Yeah, I used a bunch of it today to change out all the nylon strapping on a trapper's creel for leather. Nice little project, and boy was he happy with the final result. Stamping his name and a couple eagle, globe and anchors on the handle was just the icing for him.

I don't' think you'll regret it, it's good stuff. If you're ordering from them, they also have latigo bellies for $20 each, another excellent source of strapping, in 8-9oz weight.

Any Idea if this would take to hardening all right? would their be any issues or things to look out for? I'm going to be making some hardened leather splints soon and this is too good a deal to pass up.

I'd say that this is too thin for splints. It's only 7oz or so.

Well its only for amtgard. Either way, its a pretty damn good deal, and I'll find a use for them. Off to order a few packs and some of those kydex samples!

This is probably a really stupid question. Can you can make leather strapping to articulate lames with these?

At 7 oz., I'd hazard that its a bit too thick and stiff (heh) to work well for floating articulation.

Most of the leather I use is like this, and I tend to have problems with getting lames to articulate.
I don't know if it's the leather, or poor armouring on my part.
(You can break leather over a stake to make it more supple.)

Try that Pitbull Armoury trick of using two straps of what looks like 5-6oz belly leather, cut from the hide, everywhere that you had a single strap of that stiff stuff, Buster, which belongs on fasteners, with buckles, or on poleweapon striking edges for a little more stiffness and better durability. Belly leather is already soft and flexible, if not quite as tough, hence the doubling up. Stack 'em, so the occupy the same place and space and only take one rivet to fasten. A cross section would be like --[] [] |-->, where [] is a strap; | is metal lame; ----> is the rivet's way through.
