Re: Helm pading?
If you decide against using camping foam/Smurf blubber, try using pipe insulation. You being from Vancouver BC you probably don't need it described. Install it vertically in your helm, pieces side by side, cut to suitable length. This automatically gives both padding and ventilation channels, which you are going to want.
What type of helm(et) do you have?
Keep an eye out for good prices on linen, either for a period liner of quilted cloth or a smaller amount for a couple of arming-coifs to keep sweat out of your eyes. Using linen means a much cooler helm, as foam will hold in any of the heat your head is trying to radiate. Linen just wicks sweat and heat away. Spaces between foam elements in the hat help with cooling too.

If you are referring to my illustrations the blue in the diagram does not represent "blue camp foam".
It is supposed to represent black EVA foam from Windrose. I made it blue because black is a bad color to show overlaps in a diagram.
You CAN use Smurf Blubber with this design. But I do not recommend it.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

I bought a black yoga mat from Dick's sporting goods for like $40.00....1/2" thick and very squishy, super-comfy but does keep the heat in a good bit. You get lots of material for your purchase.

If you go the foam route, use this:
Find the pattern for your helm, you know, the football-shaped piece of cardboard that eventually became two helm-halves. trace this pattern onto your foam. Cut it out, but cut it slightly smaller than the pattern you traced. Put the two halves inside your helm and bingo!
