I don't think there are any rule problems with using an actual metal chain, as per period, for a lanyard to your helm, your sword, or your dagger.
Much as I hate to suggest it, you could also use plastic chain.

I dont see any place in the society marshal's handbook where it says lanyards are required. i looked in the weapons section and see nothing stating they are required. anyone know where it said they are required?

I did use this on my secondary, but I used it quite often as a great weapons fighter, and since our tourney fields were often small, it seemed prudent. I also think that the wording has changed a bit since I was an active fighter, since this is a bit more specific than I remember.VII. WEAPONS STANDARDS
A. General
1. NO METAL OR UNAPPROVED RIGID PLASTIC MAY BE USED IN THE STRIKING SURFACE OR SURFACES OF ANY WEAPON.
2. Primary weapons used single-handed shall have a wrist strap (or equivalent restraint) which will keep the weapon from leaving the immediate area of the user. Restraints are not required on hafted weapons used single-handed, or on single-handed back-up weapons
