Whoops.

Oh well. I hadn't run across them yet, so maybe I helped share the love with some others like myself.

Sad thing is it isn't black anymore. I heard the person who bought it had the finish removed and taken back to a bright polish. And then took it to South Africa where it will never again been seen in the European jousting community. Or so I heard.

That is the definition of sexy.... *drool* It looks like hes wearing tungsten then way its both shiny and black/dark grey. Is that level of eveness hard to produce?
How historicly accurate is this kit?
Are there any extant examples or black and gold?

Yes, I believe Tobias sold that harness some years back. It was originally made by Robert MacPherson I believe.
The last I saw Tobias was wearing a 15th century "hero" armour. There were pictures floating around at one point, but I'm not sure where.
Here's a link to a pic of his new armour:

This is a theoretical harness of English manufacture c. 1460, based on Tobias's personal research on the subject. There are no surviving English armors from this time period; only components and artwork, particularly effigial. I trust it's about as accurate an interpretation as you can get of a sort of harness which doesn't exist any more! The man has a Ph.D in the study of arms and armor.

I think that the armour is incredibly accurate except for the black finish which was achieved by a modern blackening process, the same way that guns are blackened. After heavy use the finish was no longer even, and pretty scratched up, which is probably why it's new owner had it taken back to bright polish. Toby also says that his more recent research has suggested that a mirror polish was one of the most expensive finishes on armour. Considering the black finish here was achieved after mirror polishing, it is unlikely it would be re-blacked, making the colouring one of the only inauthentic things about the harness.
His heroic armour is also an old one now. Most of it was made extremely quickly for a particular joust, so it's been gradually sold on as parts of his new harness have been finished:

I'm glad to see that he is still using some of the stuff I built. The helmet, crest, saddle and stirrups are all from the black armor.

Thank you, Andy! It is indeed a raptor's talon. (anyone caught referring to it as the "chicken foot" will receive a withering glance over the top of my glasses)
I worked it up out of (.062"?) sheet brass. It only weighs a few ounces. The plume tube has some twisted wire work and pearls.

@Mac. When I talked to Dr Capwell about helms, he had nothing except praise for the armet you made him. At the time you were not taking commissions due to ill health, but he said if you were then he would recommend you immediately.

Not surprising! Mirror polishing requires a great deal of labor in final planishing as well as the actual polishing.

Mac- thats one thing I had forgot to ask you when we were at Chris's shop. Do you still make armour on occasion for yourself?

Corey,
I don't think I have made any armor for myself since about 1985.

That seems to be the bane of a good armourer.
I recently retired the set of legs I've been using since 1994 after finally making myself new ones.

I'm still wearing the legs I made in 1988 for SCA and now I fight rebated steel exclusively. As soon as James Gillespie has a break restoring real armour, he promised to find time to make me some repro Milanese legs in mid-carbon steel. Until then, the old ones still work fine.
