Curious about using brass in a splinted harness.

Post by Sigismund von Helfenstein »

In the pictured scenario, how does the brass fare?

Don't ask me why I had to sketch this in paint to visualize it. Then I just added some tags because this is easier than explaining it.

Exactly as well as the steel.

So, probably, pretty well.

About what I figured but I wanted to see if there was some factor I had missed.

Not looking to use a lot of brass, just some for looks, but always with a steel plate for backing.

These are some arms I made for a friend a year ago.
Brass kick plate over hardened leather.
One of the decorative rivets blew out and he had to replace the straps holding the forearms to the elbow cop.
Nearly weekly fighter practice for the last year and multiple wars and tournaments. Still going strong.

The real protection is the hardened leather and padding, not the brass.

This was door kick plate shaped and formed over steel. It has held up just fine over the three months or so I've been using it. I don't know what the leather in the middle will do.
