Leather Basket Hilt? (SCA)

Post by Thorsteinn Raudskeggr »

Has anyone done a list legal Leather basket like Purple Heart Armoury's?

I like my cross hilt but the comfort of not needing a full glove with my (baldar) basket hilt got me thinking that it would be cool to have a narrow floating bastardised leather gauntlet (forward bit)/basket hilt on my pretty crosshilt as a permanent option to wear with some nice half gauntlets.

I can kinda see it in my head but it's just not working. Help?

Not sure where the other thread is, but this has been pretty fully discussed recently. Answer is yes, legal basket hilts can be made from leather. Not entirely sure I would trust my gloved fingers inside them without other protection - but I don't trust wire hilts that far either ;)

I fought for several years with a pair of sole leather baskets.

Oh I figured to re-enforce the basket with steel or aluminum.

Decades ago "Carlyle" on the archive built some of these. They looked sort of like gauntlets, with flaired cuffs and fitted to the hand.

They were big enough to allow for some padding inside the hilt or on the glove. I think that there were patterns lying around somewhere.

I have seen some cuphilts that were made of barrel plastic that were then covered in varying colors of leather. - maybe something like that will work for you?

Now for a quick thread hijack.

This topic brought to mind a question. Could one make a leather crossguard? I'm thinking layering and shaping a few pieces around the rattan. Has anyone thought about or attempted this?

Yes.
The greatsword in the photo below was made of sandwiched leather layers with 2 thin metal bits to hold it together.

Sir Vitus has some rondel daggers in the classified section with leather disks.

Yes, can definitely be done, numerous ways to approach it. Haven't got around to actually building any yet, but have it in mind as a use for scrap leather.
