What I want now is opinions on the pattern I came up with, and suggestions for the mounting hole pattern.
These are 8 inches for the long ones, and 6 for the short.
One and a quarter inches wide at the long end, one inch at the short end.
I've seen splint sets that were shaped more, but using many more splints to achieve that.
(As in looked more like a pointed cathedral arch pattern when laid out.)
I went for the "Squared tombstone" style because I felt it offered more flexibility in fitting them to the leathers.
But is that really just lazy, or would a more gracefully curved upper end profile work better for fit and function?
I am inclined to put in mounting holes in sets of three down the center...But is there a better pattern that others have used?
Some of the originals that have been dug up use double mount holes, side by side down the length of the splint.
That could prove problematic if someone uses double cap rivets to mount them- but would work for say, peened galvanized roofing nails, copper burrs or similar methods.
While I don't want to get into a lot of extra work, I do want to make these as easily mounted or used as possible for the eventual buyer.
So..
Opinions?
Would future sets benefit from a more shaped design?
Or does this one seem to work fine?
Three holes? More holes? different hole pattern?
All feedback helps me in puzzling out what works and what doesn't.
