dumb question about helmets and gorgets
ok, this is a question that's DEFINATLEY going to prove that I'm new...
I've ordered a gothic breastplate, gorget, and full sallet.
Question I've got is since I've never seen s sallet actaully worn. How does the bevor work? does the sallet actaully rotate when you move your head, or is it fixed? does the gorget actaully attach to the helmet, or is it just a metal turtle-neck?
Yes, I realize these are pretty silly questions.. and I'm a weenie for ordering a style of armour that I've never even seen... but I'm not in the SCA, and the groups that I would use this armour with rarely go for historical accuracy. I'm something of a black sheep.

The sallet just sits on top of your head, and dosnt really connect to the bevor, so you should have pretty free head movement.the bevor is held in place by a strap running round the back of your neck,in addition to that they are sometimes also attached to the breastplate by a staple or pin.Hope this helps.....Otto

so the helmet just sort of slides around the bevor? Doesnt that bind at all?

Exactly as Vladimir says. For SCA combat, the most practical way is to build a close helm that looks like a sallet--the bevor and visor pivot from the same axis, and the bevor rides atop the breastplate, and turns with the head. This is even authentic, since there is an extant Helmschmied sallet built this way.
But in period it was more common for the pieces to be separate, and the bevor to remain stationary. The sallet should be large enough to clear the bevor as you turn your head.

A position worth taking, is worth defending.

OH, and there are NO dumb questions about bevors, gorgets, and helms. This is your head and neck we're talking about! You need those.

heh - thanks.

I just never really thought about it until I was actually going to buy one. I mean, frankly it's pretty daft of me to even order one when i havnt tried one on to see about visibility, comfort, etc... but hey - I'm a slave to fashion, and they're all the rage this century.
