So somone mentioned putting oculars on some of my spangens instead of just the nasal that I usually do. Think Im going to try it. So some questions that come to mind,
Should the ocular be purely ornamental and sit outside the bargrill (as the nasal I currently make does)? Or should it be an actual structural part of the helm with the bar grill starting beneath it? I have seen them done both ways. Hell, I have seen them both well done and poorly done both ways. What are the pros and cons, both for the person fighting in the hat and for the person building the hat? Comments? Opinions? Snide remarks?

For occulars, the closer you can get the "mask" to your face, the less tunnel vision you will have.

So, making the occulars as part of the helm instead of laying them on top means better vision for the wearer.

I find that light steel oculars over a grill tend to get anviled & get pretty beat up. It also puts more bulk right over the nose area where most helms need a bit of space, and adds up to more weight than just doing the ocular out of a heavier steel (12g seems to hold up pretty well).
