New fluted lobster pot helm, Finished!

Post by Llewelyn Gododdin »

Hey folks!
I am trying to get better at posting shop progress pics, so here are a few from this week. I am working on a fluted and embossed lobster pot. It is made out of a mild heavy spun top (it was a hair over 14 gauge in the crown). I roughed in 14 flutes and then I am putting a small flute in the middle of each one. Its basically roughed in all around and now I need to spend some hours plannishing. Anyhow pics here

Thanks for looking!

You, Master Llewelyn, have just raised the bar on what is possible with a spun-top lying around the shop. Armourcake mega-Woots!

Best use of a spun dome yet! :D

Would you be willing to show what stake and hammers you are using for this? Might help others understand the process.

Anybody wanna supply spun-domes for this purpose? -- feedstock for latest-period lobstertail pots, Zischägge, und so weiter?

I could use a few more, I would love to make more of these tops. It is so nice to be able to hammer on something without a weld as long as it is thick enough.

So this headpiece came out decidedly round, though very handsome. Still marvelous. Poster wcallen -- Wade -- might weigh in on whether the historical-example skulls tended to a high degree of roundness, circularity, or not.

I don't know about all of these, and I know less about the highly decorated ones than others, but I have seen plenty of the "one piece bowls with some ribs" that are pretty round.

The English 2 piece ones with the seam down the middle do appear to be more head shaped.

Personally I like a little head shape in my helmets, but that doesn't seem to have been a concern all of the time.

Here's a link to a Flickr stream by someone with a "thing" for zischägge(s). http://www.flickr.com/photos/8203475@N02/page3/
(Does anyone here know how that word is supposed to pluralize?)

I thought the umlaut did the job...? But if it doesn't, I'd resort to the English, being that's what I'm typing.

You astonish me, sir! I thought you made it a point to type in as many languages as you could.

It turns out that putting the umlaut in the search gets more German language hits. eg. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zisch%C3%A4gge As far as I can tell it gets an umlaut in the singular in German. Strangely, the un-umlauted pronunciation is (I think) closer to the original Turkish.

Yup, I beat it to a slight head shape but it is still kind of round I usually make all my helms more fitted, This was a fun way to use a spun top though! I will probably make a few more of these with different fluting patterns from two part skulls. For the last one I made I embossed the tail a bit and I think I may do that on the next one here are some newer pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/40421015@N02/8656312806/
