New guy with too-big breast/back plate

There is a new fighter in our barony.
He is about 6'3" and fairly thin. (I would estimate about 170lbs) Today was his first day at our fighter practice.

He has a fairly nice Italian/Germanic breast / back plate. However, to get it to fit him correctly, he has about an inch of foam padding on the inside. The cutouts for the arm holes are flared a bit and I do have rounded chisels to re-do the flaring as needed. Also a propane torch for normalizing/annealing as well.

Suffice it to say that he had a little trouble feeling blows through it. Being a lefty, I threw my standard wrap to his lower back to see how he would gauge it - he barely felt it. I threw it fairly hard and he shrugged, saying that he figured it was a good blow, but again, barely felt it.

I don't have pictures of him in his rig right now and should be able to sometime soon. Any ideas initially on how/if it could be cut down a bit to make a better/more snug fit on him? Or should he look to getting a more custom fitted setup down the road?

I have already talked to him about getting together to make a proper gambeson for him, and he is definitely all for setting up with proper equipment. His arms and legs he got from Armstreet - those fit him just great.

The answer will depend on the actual shape of the piece and how badly it fits. Get some pictures.

I would include images of him wearing the breast without the back and back without the breast so we can see up inside and see how bad the fit is.

I was doing a little in person consult like this at the Texas hammer fest. The subject was a woman and... with permission.... it quickly degenerated to shoving hands up inside the backplate to show where the waist really should have been and how it should have fit. This can get a little personal.

Back to this piece - depending on how nicely it is shaped and how badly it fits, anything is possible. Pics before useful comments.
