What would this cost?

Post by Prince Of Darkmoor »

What would a hauberk for a medium sized person (mid length sleeves, mid thigh length shirt) using 3/8" 16ga stainless steel links in a king's maille pattern cost?

Pure insanity, right? My roommate has delusions of making one and is looking to buy the wire sometime soon. I think he's nuts. So, what would something like this go for?

It would be double the cost dude...it is double the links. It took me twice the time and links to make a sample. so I would say at least double.

I'd say triple, not only is it double the rings, but I'd say it's almost 4 times the work, perhaps it's becuase I'm not a great mailler, but it takes me forever to get the second set of rings in and closed.

What would a stainless steel 16ga shirt normally go for then? If I knew that, I could easily multiply the cost by 2.5 or 3 and get a decent estimate.

Well, the way I see it is this: SS is much more expensive than Gal ever is AND is harder to handle and cut, so. Start with your cost for same size rings in Gal (what you charge for it I mean) multiply that by 2.5 or 3 depending on what you think the effort is worth (personaly i think that with the added effort in cutting and closing SS compared to Gal AND given the fact that you're thinking King's maille a x3 factor is appropriate) once you've got that figured out, calculate the cost of supplies and add to it. (remember that king's maille will require twice the length of wire than a regular 4/1 weave would.)

Overall, I wouldn't be surprised with a cost around 1400$-1500$US not to mention the fact that this monster will weigh probably around 60lbs (remember that SS is heavier than Gal)

All and all, I agree with you that your roommate has lost it. You might want to try and convince him in using 18Ga SS instead, king's maille is much stronger than 4/1 and it will greatly recude the weight and cost.

My .02$

force him to make it riveted. King's maille is a bitch for upkeep I've heard... a lot harder to see a missing link.

Kiing's maille is the popular if not proper term for 8 in 2, i.e. all the rings are doubled up IIRC
