padding and chin strapping helms
Is there a how to video out there somewhere that I can refer people to?

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
Or do you just take those people to a fighter practice in Gaffney, instead?
I'm having some trouble imagining how someone can't figure out how to install a chinstrap or a chin cup drawn tight with cord. Videos aren't remotely necessary when a one-page diagram will do it.
The closed-cell-foam spangen-frame is easy to describe and desirable for being cooler even if the helm isn't a Valsegard and full of holes. Where's the beef, here?? That there's some problem I understand. What I don't get is why these people think they have to do something esoteric, or how.

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
Daknow. First time I needed to pad / chinstrap a helm I bought some smurf hide and figured it out. That said, the question keeps coming up. As the people are paying me for the helm, it would be nice if I could offer them some assistance. With like, pictures and stuff....

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
It may be easier just to book mark the relevant threads and the 4 point chinstrap diagram.

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
There's this longstanding armouring tradition of shipping helms unstrapped, for the customer to exert his creativity on. But now we're running into a market segment you say is quite without a clue how to organize chinstraps.
Hmm. Y'know, most people's ears are in about the same place on any human head. Want to consider installing D-rings for a four-point anchor system, through which rings the customer can, no tools, pass 550 cord or loop a leather strap through? The four points are located relative to the ear: the upper two an inch forward of the top of the ear, whose height is going to be very much the same as the upper edge of the sight, and the points as much as approximately 5/8" above that, leaving room for the client to adjust helm height until he's looking out of the sights; the lower two an inch forward of the earlobe and maybe up a little higher. Probably no more than approximately 5/8" there either.
It may be the anchor points can be located yet farther forward into the helm face -- maybe as much as another inch forward. I've not heard exactly why a four-point anchors as far back as it does.
With 550 cord, they simply pull the chincup tight, and secure the cord by knot or by slider.
I know there are pix onsite laying out the 4-point chinstrap, and I figure you can download these and print them out for use as diagrams included in helm shipments.

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
Perhaps its worth pointing out, I sell a lot of starter buckets. Some of them are to groups who want a loaner hat or the like, but a lot of them are first helms for new fighters. So we are not dealing with stupid or lazy people, just very inexperienced people. White mountain armoury, I would love to be able to offer your padding kits with my helms, perhaps we can come to an arrangement?

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
I've had plans to do a "how to" on padding helms for some time. Maybe it is time for me to get off my butt and do it.

(on Pennsic) I know that movie. It is the 13th warrior. A bunch of guys in armour that doesn't match itself or anybody elses, go on a trip and argue and get drunk and get laid and then fight Tuchux.

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
Seeing as I'm currently doing a chinstrap, I'm not sure where to start I bought it from windrose but...the instructions are abit lacking I'm a picture person -_- lol
That being said, a video would have so many hits.

Re: padding and chin strapping helms
Run onsite Search on "four point chin strap" Aeden, and find a post with the pic in it. Done. It can be done with leather strap or with suitable cord and a fastener. Quite a few people just like to pull the cord tight and secure with one of those plunger fasteners. No groping and fiddling, done in a second.
