A great idea for a smaller shop. For those folks who have little space to do little more than basic repairs.

I'm already thinking about getting one of these. The local shop is sorely lacking in good tooling for shaping.

Hal, it sounds like you need to add it to your list.

OK, I should finish up my testing then.

I took coreythompsonhm's advice and beveled the edges at the crease slot because it dug into the metal while using a chisel on it.

Sean's idea about the bar grill bending lugs will also be incorporated into it.
I can copy the lugs that are on my farrier anvil.

I was also thinking about a hole on the back corner to punch old rivets out.

When finished I will put this prototype on the classifieds auction.
That should allow me to buy more supplies to make the production model.

Good idea on the hole for punching out rivets, maybe on the other corner put in a divot the same size as a 3/16" rivet for a makeshift set, no crushed rivet heads while setting the rivet.

Done, I was thinking about that also 1/8" and 3/16"... two rivet divots.
See, great minds do think alike.

underneath the plate you could add a bottle opener
great tool Hal, very useful to take with you to events for repairs instead of 30 other items

if you can repair your armour, open bottles and cook bacon on it this is just about all you need to take to an event, just like in Douglas Adams hitch hikers guide to the galaxy it could be as important as knowing where your towel is

Looks like you can cook Canadian bacon on it. Seems like just about the perfect tool for me. If it could toast an English muffin as well, I would have the perfect set for me. Make me a samich in the mornin' then have a beer, then another and another, then play with dangerous tools.... and another samich with a beer... Where so I sign up?

Yes, one could cook bacon and eggs in the Texas summer I am sure.
However at this time, I am trying to test an anticlistic helm back plate.

Bend the back plate to shape over a pipe stake.


Use the raising hammer to start the curve.


Straighten out the wrinkles with the rawhide mallet on the flat anvil portion.


Use the rawhide mallet to further sink the curve.


Reverse planish the inside over the ball.


Use the raising hammer to get a more curved shape.


Tomorrow, if the weather permits, we will further the development test and show creasing and edge rolling.
I can see now I will have to round one back corner of the tool for the tight radius edge roll.

Well this prototype is finished... it worked for me.
I could do anticlistic shaping, raising, planishing, bouging, edge rolling, creasing and rivets.

The last test was the bacon.



Never got around to the bottle opener, as my beer had a twist off top.
I could bend 1/4" rod in the slot, over the goose neck and the hole in back, so I did not weld any bending lugs.

This is how the first tool ended up.



I have a couple ideas on how to improve it, but this prototype is finished.
Thank you all for your design input and support with this crazy idea.

Ok, I'm interested in what this next crazy idea is!

Judging from this one, I'm saying some sort of almond shaped dishing tool.

Funny you should mention the triangular dishing form for spangen panels.
I have been asked in the past to make one of those. Perhaps it is time.
